Forty years of Hawaii Five-0 In November a suggestion of the fans getting together were made by a friend of mine. We tried to hash out several ideas on how to make this come about. I presented this idea to Annette and between the three of us (3rd party to remain a silent partner); we tried to come up with some suggestions on what fans would like to do. This information was posted in the January 2008 Central Dispatch newsletter. We had hoped a large contingent would want to do this. After all, it’s to celebrate the fact that our favorite show is now 40 years old and still gathering fans from all over the world. We had a respectful turnout for buying the 1st set of DVD’s. Our interest seemed to drop though when the 2nd season did not have the much-wanted episode ‘So Bored She Hung Herself’. I have not heard of the stats yet for season 3, but I hope it was decent enough to help make Season 4 come out sooner. With all of this interest I was hoping the spirit of the show would spur people to show a better interest in celebrating the interest in getting together to celebrate this special time. But alas, it’s not seeming to be happening. I am not sure why but the response has been very slow to almost non-existence. So far, only 6 people have responded with firm assurances that they will be there. I have 3 that say they will do their best to try to save for the trip and 2 who said they will try to be there if they can get the time away from work. We, the arrangers, were hoping to get about 50 people who would commit firmly into attending. With this large amount of people we would have an excellent chance at getting to do and see some special events - like a luau at the Diamond Head Studios and a trip to the top of the Illikai where McGarrett turns his steely eyes into the camera for that great close up. The realization of the lack of interest might be coming from several areas…one: lack of funds. We realize the economy is hitting everyone’s pocket book hard - I know it’s keeping me home; two: older members already having done a similar thing at the 1996 Mahalo Con: three: residual bad feelings that might have occurred at this last event; and four and I hope absolutely NOT the case, a true lack of interest in the show. This being said we are trying to redesign the event down for those that are still interested. Our silent partner is working hard to see if we can still somehow get some of the fans together to celebrate this anniversary. So far, what we have come up with is the same dates; maybe gathering at Duke’s for lunch with some of the stars; everyone chipping in and renting a van to go see the sights. But everything else would be al-a-carte so to speak. The main thing is, that I want to remind everyone of is…we also have people who are much younger now as fans and several of them have not been to Hawaii yet. This would be a great chance for us experienced people to show off the place where our favorite show was created. So, people, we’ve sort of set a deadline, April 1st. We need to know from you if you want this thing to happen. Those who have already responded, we thank you, but it is those who have not said anything we want to hear from. Please send your responses to TW1151@Comcast.net.
