The Fox

By Terri Whitman

The streetlights were still visible but not really needed this morning. The pre-morning dawn was showing a colorful sunrise with all the beauty of an early fall morning in Waikiki. The clouds drifting over the mountains showed a promised of some rain for later in the morning.

Dan Williams wasn’t paying any attention to this scenery as he pulled up to the Iolani Palace. He was tired and weary. He did notice that the boss’s car was already there. Shaking his head. Steve probably spent the night here again working. Finishing up the paper work on this last case, he thought. Dan knew it was just like McGarrett to work on through the night until a case was completely wrapped up paperwork and all.

Entering the office, Dan found McGarrett in his office looking over the files from the case. The exhaustion etched all over the boss’s face told Dan that McGarrett had once again stayed up all night.

When he saw Dan at his door, he leaned back in his chair, "I thought I told you to take some time off."

Dan smiled. "I am, but I wanted to finish my report before I left."

The night before McGarrett had told him it was going to be an order if he didn’t take some time off. That’s when Dan decided to go to the North Shore and catch some of the waves. Not one for needing to find an excuse to be on his board; Dan realized he was looking forward to this weekend. It would be a time to think and replenish his spirit and soul.

This last case had taken a lot out of him. He had lost a good friend, Moki Alima, in the last case. Dan had been there to helped catch John Piermont, a known drug dealer, who was the person who sold his old friend the tainted heroin.

Dan had a suspicion his friend, Moki, had been using drugs the last few times he had seen him, but he was never sure until recently. But by then it was too late for his friend. McGarrett knew Dan had been a close friend of Moki Alima and his family.

As Dan walked into McGarrett’s office, McGarrett motioned for him to have a seat. McGarrett put down his paperwork and looked up at his best friend. He saw an extremely tired man in front of him. McGarrett had seen Dan tired before, but this time it wasn’t the body type of tired that Dan was showing. He looked at his friend for a moment before he spoke.

"You OK? Your paperwork can wait until you return you know. You don’t have to have it in today. Monday would be fine," McGarrett suggested in a low tone. He was looking at his friend with concern.

"I’m fine Steve. I just want to wrap this up before I leave. I’ve decided to take you up on your advice and take the weekend off. Maybe catch some waves at the North Shore," Dan replied. Tiredness was very evident in his voice.

"If you need more then two days, do so. We’ll manage until then."

Dan didn’t answer but just looked at his hands. "I just wish that I had been able to help Moki more. Maybe if I had pushed him more maybe he would have told me he was having trouble. I just don’t know Steve. What a waste.  Why didn’t he let someone know," Dan said with a deep sigh.

McGarrett had moved around his desk and took the chair next to his friend. Concerned and caring, he placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder. "Danno, you can’t blame yourself. Moki chose to use drugs. It was just a matter of time before the end came. It’s to bad it ended with the lose of his life, but it was his choice."

See his young friend was taking the death of his friend hard, McGarrett continued, "Maybe someday people will get smart and not choose to waste their lives by using drugs, but don’t count on it. As long as there are scum in the world like Piermont, who push this junk, there will always be people like Moki who think that they can escape from life’s problems by using drugs. And as long as these people make the wrong decisions about selling or using drugs, there will be a need for people like you and I to stop them."

Softly and in a lowered voice McGarrett continued.  "Danno, we can’t take their problems on as if it was our responsibility.  We can only enforce the laws and if they choose to break the law, well, that's when it’s our duty to bring them to justice."

For several minutes neither spoke. "Danno, even if you had known he was using drugs, what could you have done? He chose to use drugs and in turn it help destroy his life. It was his decision."

"You're right Steve, but it was such a waste. When we finally caught Piermont, all I wanted to do was to get my hands on his throat. To kill him like he killed Moki. But if I had I wouldn’t be any better then Piermont and I couldn’t stand for that."

"That’s why you’re the cop you are. You know that killing Piermont wouldn’t take care of the hurt your feeling now. Now go.  Put your files on your desk and get out of here before I’m forced to order you out," McGarrett said with a stern tenderness for his young friend.

Standing up, Dan nodded his head. With his hand on Dan’s shoulder he walked with him to the door. There, Dan stopped with the door open and turned to McGarrett. "Thanks Steve for being my friend and understanding.  I’ll be OK. See you in a few days."

When the door closed, McGarrett walked over to the lanai doors. Opening them, he leaned on the frame. Looking out he saw that the promise of a morning rain had started. The rain coming down lightly and when the breeze caught it, the drops were swirled around causing a rainbow to appear just outside the Iolani Palace walls.

McGarrett stayed there for several minutes before coming back into the office. Sitting down once again, he picked up his cup only to find it empty. Getting back up, he walked out to the coffee machine. Jenny had already started a new pot.

"Danny OK Boss?" she asked. Jenny thought of each of the Five-0 team as part of her family and was always concerned when one of them was hurt or unhappy.

"Yeah, I told him to get out of here and forget the final paperwork until he returns in a few days," McGarrett said with a sigh.

"It looks like you need to take some of your own advice Boss. You look worn out yourself. Kono will be here soon. If anything important goes on he can give you a call. "Jenny was trying to get her boss to get some rest. McGarrett had a habit of over extending himself too much, especially lately.

The thought of getting some rest himself sounded good to McGarrett. Smiling, "Jenny, have I ever told you your beautiful when you’re bossy?"

"You're always concerned for us. Maybe I’ll take your suggestion myself and take the day off myself. When Kono and Chinn comes in, tell them I’ll be at home but available if something important comes along."

"OK Boss." Smiling, Jenny knew McGarrett would take off but would not rest as fully as he should. He’ll find some reason to come back in later that day to see how things were progressing even if he never receives a call from Kono.

Dan was putting the last of the items he wanted to bring with him to the beach in his car. He was looking forward to a day of sun and surfing. Tired as he was the surf always seemed to reenergize his body and soul. Surfing was a demanding sport and he loved pushing his fit body to the limits when it came to surfing.

Putting the last of the items in the back of his Mustang, he felt as if he was being watched. Looking around before he got in his car, he didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Shaking his head, he started his car and took off for the beach.

As he drove down the road Dan looked in his rearview mirror. That's when he saw a thin blond girl running from the bushes in front of his apartment. I knew someone was watching me, Dan thought to himself. Smiling, he made a mental note to keep watch out now for the young girl. Most likely another runaway, he thought. Hawaii seemed to lure runaways. The promise of sunny beaches, warm days and leisure way of life seemed to be a magnet to the youth of today.

Traffic was heavy for the morning. The waves were up and it seemed that everyone was out to do some surfing. Finding a parking spot, Dan gathered his belongings that's when he notice the red ice chest was missing.  "That little thief.  That's why she was hovering near by. She had to wait until I left so she could carry the chest off. Well, I hope she enjoys the chicken sandwiches I packed," Dan said to himself.

"Hi Dan!" a voice said from the beach.

Dan looked up and saw Paul Hashimoto and his sister, Susie. They were going to surf with Dan today. When Paul came up to the car Dan grabbed his hand to shake it.  "Hi Paul, Susie. Glad to see you both could make it."

"What do you mean us making it, you're always the one who never makes it to the beach," teased Paul.

"Can we give you a hand with your things? Hey, did you forget something? Where's the ice chest? You told me you'd be bringing lunch," Susie asked.

"I had planned on doing just that, Susie, but a little thief apparently snatched it while I went back to the apartment for the rest of the things.  I didn't realize it was gone until I got here. I thought I had been watched as I packed the car, but I didn't see anyone until I drove off. That's when I saw her running from the bushes in front of my apartment," Dan smiled at the thought of this young teenager finding that the life she was after here on Hawaii wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

"Did she get everything?" Paul asked. He was hoping to have a couple of beers today.

"No she just got the chest with the food in it. I put the drinks in the blue ice chest right here," tapping the chest with his left hand as he balanced it on the side of the car.

"Well, we can always go get something later," Susie said.

The three of them spent the morning surfing. Dan and Paul caught several good waves. Susie had taken rough spills and was sitting out the rest of the morning with a sore ankle. "You two look good out there," she told them as they took a break.

"How about I go get us some stuff to eat? You two getting hungry?" asked Susie.

"Sure, let me get you some money. There's a burger place just up the road. You can pick up some hamburgers for the three of us," Dan told her.

"Maybe Susie needs to pick up some extra ones for your little teenage bandit too Danny?" teased Paul.

"Very funny," Dan threw back at him. "She did look really skinny from what little I got to see of her. I wonder when her last good meal was?"

The three of them stayed until dark before they left the beach. "Maybe your boss will order you to take some more time off Danny, then we can surf some more this week," Susie said hopefully.

"I don't think that will happen, not with the current case loads the way it's been. Steve did almost order me to take today off, but I'll be back to full duty Monday," Dan told her. He secretly did wish that he could have more time off, but he knew the demands of the job would put a stop to it.

"Well, maybe we can get some more waves in on your next break, bruddah," Paul said.

On the drive back to the apartment Dan's mind drifted to the young teenage girl who had taken his red ice chest. Who was she, where did she come from and where was she staying now, he asked himself. How is she managing to get by and mostly, why did she runaway, if in fact she was a runaway? These were questions he asked himself as he drove.

He wasn't prepared for what he saw next as he pulled into the apartment parking lot. There at his doorstop was the red ice chest. Going up to it he found a note placed on top.

'Sorry I took your food, but I was desperate and so hungry. I'll try to pay you back some day,' It was signed in a scribble that looked somewhat like the words 'The Fox'. Dan smiled as he read the note.  He now had a name for his little thief. Gathering his things together he went into his apartment.

Dan got a beer from the refrigerator and went out to his lanai.  He sat there in the dark for some time. He thought back to the case they had just finished. How long would it be before someone else took over the area McGarrett and he had just cleaned up.

The drug bust had been one of the biggest in quite awhile for them. Thankfully no one else, other then Moki, had been hurt, not even John Piermont, the drug dealer. Dan still didn't understand how anyone could use these drugs and end up destroying their bodies, mind and lives. How long will it take for people, teenagers mostly, to find out too late just how bad drugs were for them. And how many kids will die before they realize this.

Thinking of this, Dan thought of 'The Fox', his little teenage thief. Has she started using drugs yet? If she is using, has she ended up selling her body just to get her daily fix? Maybe if I can find her I can help her. Dan decided that he would keep a closer eye out for the young girl. If he could, Dan was going to try to help her.

Tired more then he realized, Dan finally got up and went to bed.  In the morning he would try to see if he could find her. He would take the rest of the free weekend he had to do this mission. Maybe, just maybe he'd find her. She looked so skinny to me. This note proves to me she wants help and maybe I can help her if I can find her.

*****

The next morning Dan got up early. He went for a walk in the area around his apartment complex. He saw some prints in the bushes and saw where the ice chest had been hidden when the girl had taken it. The prints in the dirt show she was wearing some shoes, which had a distinctive pattern to the soles. It shouldn't be too hard to find other prints of this type in the dirt around here.  Maybe I'll find her today, Dan thought.

Dan followed the prints down the dirt path next to the street.  The prints led him to another path which went back into the wooded area behind the apartment complex.

It was a well used path, showing it was used frequently by people to cut across the neighborhood to get to the beach. The prints were soon covered over by those of others using the path, but since he didn't see any prints leaving the path going off in another direction, he deduced that she must have followed this path to the beach.

Coming out of the bushes at the edge of the beach, Dan now saw where her prints left the rest. He continued to follow them for a ways. Got to be careful now, I might be able to come up on her without her seeing me, Dan thought.

At a ridge of rocks just before going out to the beach itself, Dan stopped. There was a young girl just ahead of him. Her back was toward him at the moment. Dan watched her for a while trying to decide just how to approach her without causing her to run from him.

Since he was already in shorts and T-shirt, Dan decided he would go back up the beach a ways and pretend he was taking a morning jog on the beach. This way he could approach her area without making her think he was trailing her.

Running on the beach, Dan went past her slightly. There Danny stopped and acted as though he needed to take a breather from running. Bent over with hands on his knees he bowed his head for a moment. When he straighten up he glanced her way. Dan got to see her face. Yes, it was the same girl he had seen yesterday as he drove off.

Waving at her he told her hello. She smiled and waved back. Walking slowly, he went towards her. If she had gotten a good look at him yesterday, she'll try to bolt away from him.  Well, I'll just have to take that chance.  If she doesn't run, then I can talk to her and maybe help her, Dan theorized.

The young girl held her spot. She raised her hand and waved as Dan came up to her. Dan figured her to be about 15 maybe 16 years old. Yes, she was a runaway, that he was sure of now. My God, how skinny she is.

"Hi, how are you doing? You here with your parents vacationing?" Dan asked her.

The girl looked at Dan. She wasn't sure if to run or stand her grounds. She decided to stay and greet the stranger. "Hi, my parents brought me here for my birthday," she told Dan.

She didn't want to tell him the truth, which was that she had run away from her parents some four months ago. She couldn't stand for her parents to tell her what to do any more. She figured since they had demanded she get a job to pay for the extra things she wanted she might as well leave home. Before she left she had taken some money her mother had stashed away for emergencies.

This money had allowed her to buy a plane ticket to come to Hawaii. The girl had heard that life in Hawaii would be easy and fun. Boy was she finding out how wrong that information was. At first she did have fun, playing on the beach all day and sleeping at different houses during the night. But soon she ran out of money.

To be able to feed herself she either had to steal food or items to later be sold for the money she needed. The other way to get money was by selling her body, but that was the last thing she wanted to do.

She had heard horror stories of what happened to girls who did that. She knew of several girls who had pimps, but they told her they had to pay the pimp most of the money they earned. The girl didn't like the idea of having sex with just any Tom, Dick or Harry.

One of the prostitutes, who had befriended her, had told her how sometimes they would get a man who would beat them up just for the kicks. The girl also knew that most of the prostitutes were also taking drugs. This scared her, she didn't want to get beat up or strung out on drugs like some of the people she'd seen lately.

Dan could see she was scared and ready to bolt, so he changed his tactics some in his approach to her. "I was just wondering how you liked it here? Done any surfing yet?" Dan asked her.

"No, I don't know how to surf. I just like to swim in the ocean some and lay on the beach getting some sun, you know so I can show off my tan when I get home. "She was trying to sound like she had intentions of returning home with her parents.

"I'm down here frequently and if you'd like I could teach you how to surf?" Dan offered. Maybe by getting her wanting to return to see him for surfing lessons he could learn more about her.

"OK, that sounds like fun. "The girl was becoming more at ease talking to Dan now. He didn't seem to her like he would hurt her, after all he was going to teach her how to surf.

"Good, I'll go back and get my board. I was going to have some lunch before I went surfing, would you like something to eat?" Dan offered. At least I'd get a good meal in her for today, Dan thought.

Afraid he was trying to get her to his place for sex, the girl started to back up. "No, I'm not hungry. I'll meet you here at the beach though for a lesson."

"OK, say in about one hour then. We can start your surfing lesson. " Dan said. "Hey, by the way my name is Danny Williams what's yours?"

"I'm Katie."

"Just Katie, no last name?"

"Katie Bier."

"Well, Katie Bier, visitor to the Islands, I'll be back in one hour or so, OK?"

"Yeah, that sounds great," Katie said as she started back to the bushes from which she had came.

Dan stood there watching her for a while. He saw that she went off towards palms just down the beach. I'll call the office and have them check to see if there is any reports out on her as a run away.

Dan then jogged back to his apartment. Once there he called the office.

"Jenny, hey, what are you doing there today? I thought you were going to your friends daughter's wedding?" he asked their secretary.

"I am, but I had some work that Steve needed done by the first of the tomorrow morning. When I'm done here I'll be going to the wedding. Are you enjoying your day off? Getting any surfing in yet?" she asked.

"Paul, Susie and I went surfing yesterday. We had a great day except for having to buy lunch instead of having the sandwiches I planned on."

"What happed to them? Did you forget to put them in the ice chest?"

"No, I had them all ready for us. I even loaded the chest up with lots of other things to eat, but I didn't realize that the ice chest had been stolen until I went to unpack it from the car."

"What? Stolen, by who?"

Dan explained to Jenny what had happened. "Can you do me a favor? I'd like you to check with HPD for a list of run a ways. Her name is Katie Bier. She's from the mainland. I think she's from the West Coast somewhere. She doesn't have an East Coast or mid-west accent. She's about 15 or 16 years old, about 5 foot 7, blond hair about shoulder length and blue eyes. She's really thin right now. I don't think she's had too much to eat lately. If you can get that list for me I'd appreciate it. I'm going to get some burgers and my board and met with her back on the beach. I told her I'd teach her how to surf. Maybe I can get some food in her also," Dan said.

"OK Danny. I'll leave you a message at your apartment when I have it all together for you. How long do you think she's been a run away? I hope she's not into the drug scene yet, she's so young to be ruining her life with that type of problem," Jenny said. Jenny's motherly heart always showed when it involved young kids.

"I hope she's not started using them myself. That would only complicate this problem even more," Dan sighed. He was trying not to picture this young girl getting beat up and strung out on drugs. He knew that if she wasn't already a prostitute and using drugs it was only going to be a matter of time before that would happen to her.

After making the call, Dan got into his swim trunks and gathered up the boards for the lesson he would be giving Katie. Before going back to the beach, he stopped off at the store and bought some food items to make a lunch for the two of them. He bought more then he needed as he was planning on leaving the left over food with her. The perishables he put back in the red ice chest. This way, at least, she'll have some food for a few days, he thought to himself.

He parked his car close to the beach. He then grabbed a surfboard and walked toward the area he had last seen Katie. She was no where in site. "Dam, I was afraid she'd take off before I could return," Dan said out loud.

He checked the area where he thought she might have gone after he left. There were signs that this was the place she had chosen to call home. Apparently she had made a very crude lean to and had been sleeping there. It didn't look like she took any of the items with her, because there were some clothes neatly folded in a pile next to what looked like a bed.

Dan went back to his car. After putting the board away, he pulled out the red ice chest. He also got out a piece of paper to leave a note for Katie. 'Katie, here is some food for you. Please give me a call if you need some help, any type of help. You already know where I live, so if you want to talk to me in person just come by the apartment. Don't worry about owing me for the food.  It's a gift to you. Your friend, Danny Williams'

Dan took the red ice chest and the note back to the make shift camp that Katie was using. He left the red ice chest and the note in front of the pile of clothes. He looked around again to see if maybe he could spot her near by, but no luck. Shaking his head he left for his apartment.

After changing to casual wear, he once again got into his Mustang and drove to the office. Jenny was still there when he walked in. "Danny, I thought you were going to give your little run away a surfing lesson? What happened?"

"She apparently took off again. When I got to the beach, she wasn't around. I found the place where she's calling home right now, or at least I think that's where she's calling home. I found some of her clothing and other items she using to a make a camp just off the beach. I left the food for her and a note to call me if she wants some help." Dan went into his office and looked over the information Jenny had complied for him.

Just as he thought, there was her name. The information told him about her: Katherine (Katie) Anne Bier, age 16, born December 8th.  Same as his, Danny thought to himself. Her height is 5 foot 7, hair blond, eyes blue, weight 150So she's lost quite a bit of weight, he mentally figured her weight now at about 110 Lbs.  if even that much.

Her parents were Barbara and Robert Bier from Costa Mesa, California. They had reported their daughter as a run away 4 1/2 months before.  As yet, there wasn't any criminal record on her yet. The report said her parents weren't aware of their daughter having a drug habit or having sex as of yet.

Dan looked over the lists of names wondering how many others on this list had made it to Hawaii, looking for the easy life. He saw about 300 names on the list; all from different states and a few that were from other countries. He could only hope that they would be found safe and soon, although he knew many of these missing kids would be found dead.

So engrossed with the list, Dan didn't hear McGarrett walk up to his cubical. "A-hump!"

Startled, Dan looked up to see his boss leaning against the door way with his arms crossed. "I thought I told you to take some time off Danno? What gives?" McGarrett asked his second in command.

Putting down the papers, Dan looked up at McGarrett. "I kinda still am, in a way. I went surfing with Paul and Susie and experienced a small type of crime wave of my own. "Dan explained to his friend what had happed during the weekend so far.

"So you thought you'd look for this little 'Fox' friend of yours?" teased McGarrett.

"She looks like she could use some help Steve. If you'd of seen her you would know what I mean."

"Ice chest thieves aren't exactly the type of criminals we concern ourselves with Danno?" McGarrett was still teasing his friend.

Almost rising to McGarrett's bait Dan started to come back with how he felt this young girl needed some extra help. But then he realized what McGarrett was up to and shut his mouth before he said something McGarrett could use to get back at him with again. Smiling, he asked McGarrett if the boating attire, which his boss was wearing, was the new office attire for the head of the State's most prestigious police unit.

*****

Dan walked into the office Monday morning rested and anxious to see if he could find any more information on Katie. Jenny handed him the parents phone number she had found when he arrived. "Thanks Jenny. After Steve and I finish our meeting this morning, I'll give them a call. Maybe I can find out more about the reason as to why Katie ran away from home when I talk to them."

"Well, Steve's already waiting for you. He told me to have you bring in your report on the Kim Lung murder before you go in his office. I hear there may be some break a through on the case. I sure do hope so," Jenny told him.

"Chin and Kono already in there?"

"Yes, and Duke's in there also. I guess HPD was able to follow up on some of the smaller leads. Anyway, Duke's here with his findings too."

Stepping back into his cubical, Dan gathered the paperwork needed for the meeting. "Thanks Jenny." Dan stepped past Jenny's desk and knocked on the door before he stepped into McGarrett's office.

"Good morning Danno. Duke was just telling us about the information HPD has been able to gather for us. HPD hasn't had any real luck either it seems. All leads have dried up," McGarrett told his second in command. McGarrett was standing next to the bulletin board looking at the few names and the dissolving leads they had gathered.

Kim Lung had been a small time drug pusher whose body was found stuffed in one of the large garbage containers outside of a Pearl Harbor marina's warehouse. His body had shown the effects of being beaten repeatedly, his hands were tied behind his back and he had been shot in the head execution style. It had been one of the longshoremen working there who had found the body while taking out some trash and had notified HPD.

Chin Ho and Kono didn't have much more luck at gathering any information. It seemed no one had heard anything during the night in or around the warehouse. The night security had done their sweep just an hour before the body had been found. They reported no unusual vehicles or people in the area.

Dan walked over to the board to study it more closely. As he did he notice a movement outside near the Five-0 cars. He walked over to the window and saw a person running away from the cars. Looking a little more carefully he notice something out of the ordinary with McGarrett's car.

"Steve, did you leave the windows down on your car this morning?" he asked his boss without turning around.

"Yes, there was a light breeze this morning and I thought I'd leave them open so the car wouldn't get so hot later today. Why?" McGarrett asked walking over to the window.

Looking out the window at his car, McGarrett saw that the passenger door was open. Turning around quickly, McGarrett led the way down to the cars. There they found that his car had been gone through but it didn't appear as if anything was taken.

"Danno, did you get a good look at the person you saw running from the cars?" McGarrett asked.

"Not really, just too far away. But I have an idea who it might have been," Dan said. He had a slight smile on his face.  You little stinker you, Katie, your just asking to get caught aren't you? he thought to himself.

McGarrett looked over the car at Dan. He saw the slight smile and asked him, "You think it's your little 'Fox', the ice chest thief, don't you?" McGarrett had one hand on the roof of the car pointing a finger towards his friend, his other hand was on his waste band. Shaking his head, McGarrett wondered if this run away would be making a pest of herself until she is brought in.

"What's this about a ice chest thief, boss?" Kono asked. McGarrett's teasing attitude towards Dan and Dan's smile told him and Chin Ho that there was more to this story.

"Yeah, is Five-0 going on picnic patrol now?" teased Chin Ho.

Lightly chuckling at Chin Ho's statement. McGarrett related to the other officers about Dan's stolen ice chest during the weekend. And how when he came in to check on some paperwork prepared by Jenny, that he had found Dan looking for a list of runaways. McGarrett told them how he had asked Dan if ice chest thieves was the new type of criminals he thought Five-0 should be cornering.

"Sure Steve, just like the new office attire your were sporting yourself when you came in."

Chin Ho and Kono laughed at the light bantering going on between their two friends.

"Well it doesn't look like anything was taken, Steve," Duke said, "You want me to get Che out here to take fingerprints?"

"No, Duke, I don't think there would be anything on file on her anywhere if she is as young as Danno told me. And since Danno has refilled the ice chest and gave it back to her, we don't have any prints from it to compare it with." Smiling at his friends, McGarrett rolled up the windows and locked the doors. As he did, he finally did notice something that was missing. McGarrett reached down next to the car and picked up an apple, which had rolled under the car some. "I think I know what she took. I had a small bag of apples on the seat on the passenger side. She took them."

"If you had seen how thin she was, you'd know she was probably hungry again, Steve."

"Anyway, I hope she enjoys them."

The men walked back up to the office to continue trying to find a break in their current case.

McGarrett wasn't sure but he had a gut feeling the Kim Lung murder and the death of Dan's friend, Moki Alima were somehow connected and he was positive John Piermont was at the bottom of both cases. They had Piermont dead to rights on Alima's death but McGarrett wanted to make the connection with the Lung murder also.

Going back to the office, McGarrett and Dan stood looking at the board. "Let's go over this again. What do we know for sure about this case?" McGarrett asked.

"We know Lung and Piermont both sold drugs," Chin Ho offered. "We know Lung was a small time seller with, we're pretty sure, no one working with him. We also know Piermont has some big muscle out there to do his dirty work for him."

"Boss, we also know Alima bought the drugs from one of Piermont's sellers. Maybe Lung was one of Piermont's sellers?" Kono offered.

"OK, good, what else?" McGarrett asked his men.

Chin Ho looked at the board again. He was trying to think if there was anything they might have missed. "I can't think of anything else, Steve."

"Ditto, we don't have any more information then just what we've been going over," Kono said shaking his head.

"What about the prostitutes Piermont has? Maybe they were buying their drugs from Lung and maybe that got Piermont mad. You know, their not buying from Piermont but from an outside source?" Dan offered.

"But why would Piermont care where those girls bought their drugs? All he cared about them was the tricks they brought in," Chin Ho added.

"How about the girls who work for Piermont? We might be able to get some sort of connection between Alima and Lung if we have a talk with each one of them.  Good idea there Danno," McGarrett told his friend.

"You want me to bring them all in boss?" Kono asked.

"How many are there, does anyone know?" questioned Chin Ho.

"I'm not sure on the numbers but I think there's about 15 or so.  Chin, you and Kono go and start bringing them for questioning. If you need to get some HPD help. Duke you can co-ordinate that with them," McGarrett told his men.

"Right Steve," Duke said as he followed Chin Ho and Kono out the door.

"You think there's a connection there Steve?" Dan asked.

"I'm not sure, Danno, but we've got to get a lead from somewhere and soon if we want to get Piermont for Lung's death also."

*****

Kono and Chin Ho took each end of Hotel Street to start the search for Piermont's girls. Soon they had all the known prostitutes working for Piermont. Duke had arranged for the extra HPD officers to assist in transporting the women to the Iolani Palace.

Each woman was advised that Hawaii Five-0 was doing an investigation. They were going to be asked questions about who they were working for. And if there was any difficulty in getting answers from them that would determine on how soon they would be released. Those who didn't want to co-operate would be spending some time in a jail cell and charged with prostitution.

Soon they had some information they could work with. As each woman was questioned, they told how Lung was trying to start to increase his business.

Dan was questioning, Suzy, one of the girls in his cubicle. "Do you know if Lung was getting any new women to work for him?" he asked.

"I know Lung asked me several times if I knew of any young girls looking to make some easy money," Suzy told him. "I told him I didn't really know of any other then one young skinny girl I've helped out a few times this last month."

"A skinny girl?" Dan asked her. He was thinking that maybe this skinny girl might be Katie. He opened his desk drawer and pulled out a picture of Katie he had received earlier from California. "Is this the girl you helped?" He handed the photograph to Suzy.

"Yeah, I gave her a place to sleep a couple of times. She was also hungry, boy could that kid eat. I told her how to make some easy money, but she said she'd rather not do that. Then during the last night she stayed with me, she stole some money and food and left. I haven't seen her since."

"Did she give you any indication as to where she has been staying?"

"No and I didn't asked her. I felt sorry for her so I helped her out. I can tell you this, I won't do that any more, not with her stealing from me."

"About how much did she take?"

"She took over $500. Boy, did Piermont get mad when he learn she took the money. That money is what I was to turn over to him. He told me he would send out one of his men to take care of her."

Leaning more forward in his chair, Dan asked her, "What's his name?"

"Some brute of a monster name Juno. I've only met this creep once and he scared the living daylights out of me. He loves to beat the living hell out of people. Once he's done with someone, I've heard he then ties them up and shoots them in the head, real gangland style you know."

"Hold on a minute, I want Steve to hear this." Dan excused himself and went to get McGarrett.

Dan knocked sharply on McGarrett's door before opening it.  "Steve, I think we've got out lead. Come here and listen to this."

McGarrett came out quickly and followed Dan to his cubical. "Suzy, this is Steve McGarrett, the head of Five-0, I want you to repeat what you've just told me."

Suzy retold what information she had. McGarrett asked her to repeat it again for the recorder and asked if she would testify in court what she knew. Suzy said she would. She gave a complete description of Juno to the sketch artist so they would have a picture of what he looked like. She was advised to inform the office is she changed her address and then was released.

Chin Ho and Kono were brought in and advised of the new information on the case. They then went back out to ask the remaining women if they has anything to add to the case.

Dan had copies of the picture made and past out to every HPD unit on the Island. An APB was put out for Juno's arrest when he was found. Within an hour of the APB a sitting of Juno was called in.

They reached the area where Juno was last seen. They questioned some of the people in the area. They told how they had seen Juno grab an extremely skinny girl and put her in his car.

"Steve, that might be Katie!"

"Easy Danno, we're not sure yet if he's nabbed her or not. You get the license from him?"

"Yeah, I've already put an APB on the..."

The radio in McGarrett's car squawked, "Central calling McGarrett, Central calling McGarrett."

McGarrett and Dan raced to the car. "Central this is McGarrett go ahead.

"The car you wanted has been seen parked up on Tantalus Drive. A man was seen dragging a woman out of it going into the bushes up there."

"Thanks Central, McGarrett out. Chin, Kono let's go, they've found the car. Come on Danno," McGarrett said as he got into the car.  Dan barely had time to close the door as the car jumped when McGarrett floored it. Chin Ho and Kono were right behind.

Katie had figured that with the $500 she took from Suzy, she would have enough money to be able to buy a ticket to go home. She had learned her lesson here and wanted nothing more then to sleep in her own bed at home. She was welling now to follow her parents instructions if she could just get home. She had found out the hard way that life here wasn't as easy as her friends had told her.

She was waiting for The Bus when a car pulled up. A very large man got out of the car and told her to get in it. She didn't want to and told him so. Juno then grabbed her arm and pinned it behind her. Katie squirmed as best she could trying to break his hold. Juno twisted her arm even more.

"Ow!" she screamed.

Spinning her around, Juno backslapped her with his hand. The ring on his finger cutting her face as he hit her. "Shut up and get in the car." Juno pushed her into the car and slide in next to her. Putting the car in gear, he roared down the street.

Piermont had told him to find her and get rid of her however he wanted. Juno thought of the please he would have just before he killed her. He had heard that she was a virgin. He couldn't believe a girl this old hadn't been with a man yet. He never rapped a virgin before. What a pleasure this was going to be for him. He didn't care if she didn't enjoy it at all, after all he was going to kill her when he was done.

He had planned on doing it where the body wouldn't be so easy to find, so he planned on going into the hills somewhere, where no one would find her body.  He knew of a spot that should meet his requirement just find up on Tantalus.

He didn't see the helicopter that flew over head, if he had he wouldn't have been so cocky as he pulled the cowering girl from the car. Katie stumbled as he pulled her from the car. He hit her again knocking her down. Kicking her in the ribs, he pulled her along the ground by her arm.

Going around some bushes, he found the spot he wanted. Now all he had to do is to soften this young body some more before he would tie her down to complete his sexual desires.

Katie started to scream as he hit her. Every time she tried to pull away, he would twist her arm even more. Neither of them heard or saw the cars pull up behind the car Juno had driven.

Dan was the first to see the car. "There Steve," pointing to the car parked off the road to the left. McGarrett pulled in behind and the two of them jumped out with their guns drawn. Chin Ho and Kono were right behind them.

"No, stop!" yelled Katie. The scream was blood curtailing.

Hearing the scream the men ran up the hill. McGarrett motioned Chin Ho and Kono to go around the bushes as Dan and he rushed forward.

Dan saw Katie on the ground being beaten and bloody. Juno had started to tie her arms to the bushes. He was preparing to rape her.

"Hold it Juno, Five-0." McGarrett yelled at him.

Juno turned around quickly drawing his gun and firing at McGarrett and Dan. McGarrett fired once, hitting Juno in the shoulder. Juno crumpled to the ground with a groan. Chin Ho and Kono came around the bushes just as McGarrett was standing over Juno kicking his gun further away from him.

While McGarrett was taking care of Juno, Dan had rushed to Katie's side. He gently untied her and was holding her in his arms comforting her. "It's OK Katie, I'm here to help you," he told her softly. "It's OK he won't hurt you anymore."

Katie hugged Dan crying. Her body was a mass of bruises and cuts. Her right eye was swollen shut and blood was dripping from her nose and mouth.

Chin Ho came back from the car with a blanket for Katie.  "Here Danny."

Reaching up, Dan took the blanket and wrapped it around Katie.

"Is she OK Danny?" McGarrett asked.

"I think so, but badly beaten up."

McGarrett went over to Juno again. With the help of Kono they searched Juno for weapons. After reading Juno his rights, McGarrett questioned him. "You know Juno, you're going to spend the rest of your life in prison.  Did Piermont tell you to kill this girl? What connection does she have with your boss?"

"Why should I tell you anything? What would it get me?"

"I won't give you any deals, but you can be sure that Piermont won't get the same sentence as you will. You killed for him on his orders didn't you?"

Thinking, Juno decided that if he was going to spend the rest of his life in prison why shouldn't Piermont, after all Piermont paid him to do it.

"You mean how Piermont had me take Lung out just the same way he wanted me to take out the little bitch there? Yeah, I killed him on Piermont's order. Lung was trying to take over some of Piermont's business and he didn't like it. And this little tramp took some money from one of Piermont's girls. He wanted me to teach her a lesson," sneered Juno. "If you had given me a few more minutes I would have finished the job."

"What about Alima, what connection does he have with Piermont and Lung?" Chin Ho asked him.

"Alima bought the stuff off of Lung instead of from Piermont. Piermont mad because Lung was butting into his drug business, so Piermont had me take care of Lung in my usual manner."

"Chin, book him, murder one, one count, kidnapping and attempted murder also."

Kono helped Chin Ho get Juno into the car. They then left to start the paperwork on Juno.

McGarrett walked over to Dan and Katie. Katie had quit crying and was sitting up leaning against Dan who still had his arms around her.

"So is this your little Fox Danno?" McGarrett smiled looking at the two of them.

Dan had placed the blanket around Katie more for comfort then warmth. "Yeah, Steve meet my little fox, Katie Bier from Costa Mesa."

Katie lifted her head looking at McGarrett. McGarrett had knelt down next to the two of them. She weakly waved her hand and said a mute "Hi."

*****

McGarrett and Dan walked down the hall of the hospital to Katie's room. Dan knocked softly before opening the door. "Katie, you up to talking to two friends?" Dan asked her.

"Sure, come on in."

"How are you feeling Katie?" McGarrett asked her.

"I'm feeling a lot better Mr. McGarrett. Thanks to Mr. Williams. He and I had a talk earlier and I've decided to go back home. Mr.  Williams called my parents and they are sending me some money for the plane ticket."

"That's good. The money you took was returned to Suzy and she didn't want to press any charges against you. You know she was trying to help you by taking you in during that time?" McGarrett told her.

"Yes, and I feel badly about taking it from her. I know stealing is wrong and I promise you Mr. McGarrett, I'll never do it again.  I've learn my lesson."

"Well, Danno, are you going to miss your little Fox here?" McGarrett teased his friend.

Katie looked at McGarrett with questioning eyes, "What to do you mean little Fox?"

"I told Steve about the note you left me with the ice chest.  I couldn't read your name on it. It looked like the words 'The Fox' to me, that's how I came to nick name you 'The Fox', " Danny told her.

"I didn't sign it. I ended the note saying "Thank You" but my hand was shaking so much I scribbled it. I guess it did look like 'The Fox' if you looked at it closely.

Laughing, McGarrett and Dan told her they would be there tomorrow to take her to the plane.

*****

Once they arrived at the airport, Dan went to the passenger door to open it for Katie. McGarrett got out the suitcase Dan had bought for her to take back with her what clothes she had bought while in Hawaii.

"Danny, I'll check in her luggage and get her ticket for her."

"OK, Steve.  We'll met you inside," Danny told his friend.  They both watched McGarrett go into the air terminal.  Dan turned back to Katie.

"You know you still have a surfing lesson. When you come back to visit someday, I'll give it to you."

Katie looked into Dan's blue eyes. She remembered them from when she first saw them. She felt very good knowing she had such a friend in Dan. That after all the trouble she had caused, him he still wanted to be her friend.

"I'd like that," she told him.

Without any warning, Dan gently pulled her to him and clasped his hands around her head. Very gently, he raised her head so that he could kiss her. Dan held onto to her for a moment. She had gotten a little under his skin, more then he wanted to let on. He was sorry to see her go, but knew she still had a lot of growing up to do.

McGarrett came back to see Dan and Katie still embraced. "What's this I see, a secret love affair going on here?" McGarrett said with raised eyebrows.

"No, Danny was just giving me a brotherly hug.  I'm going to miss everyone here, but especially Mr.  Williams."

"She's decided to go back to school and study law, Steve. She says she was to be a cop. Who knows maybe she will come to Hawaii and join the force."

"Just what we need a brother-sister team," McGarrett said laughing.

"Flight 419 for Los Angeles is now boarding," the announcement said.

"That's your flight," said McGarrett.

The three of them walked to the hall that led to the plane. There McGarrett gave Katie a hug. Dan hugged her once more and then let her go.

"You're more then welcome back Katie, you know that don't you?" Dan told her.

"Yes, and I want to come back," she told him.

Again the announcement called for boarding.

"Aloha pretty girl. Come back soon." Dan told her.

"Bye" she called.

Turning she walked down the ramp that led to the plane.

McGarrett and Dan watched as the plane was pushed away from the building. They stood there watching as the plane took off.

McGarrett looked at his young friend. He knew Dan was sorry to see her go.

"She'll do fine, Danno. And who knows, maybe she will join the force."

"Yeah, Steve. She'll make it now. Now she's on the right track."

They both turned and walked out of the airport. They noticed a plane going above and thought of 'The Fox' and the life she would lead which was now in front of her.
