The Delivery

The courtroom buzzed with excitement after the sentencing of James Conners, the bank employee embezzler. Twenty minutes is all it took the jury to find the man guilty. As the officers led Conners away, he spouted off, claiming he’d get even with Detective Williams, who had arrested him.

“Congratulations John,” McGarrett said. Unable to suppress a grin, he temporarily placed his file down and watched the officers escort Conners out of the room. Gotcha!

“Thanks Steve, but it never would have happened without Danny’s help,” John Manicote said as he gathered his stuff.

“Well, the break came when I compared signatures,” Dan Williams smiling merrily.

“Yes, your skill as a FDE (Forensic Document Examiner) helped out a lot,” the attorney told him as he tried to snap the clasp of his briefcase closed. Finally it did.

Leaving the table area, they made their way down the aisle way towards the door of the courtroom. Manicote, who was in the lead, went to push the door open when the clasp gave way, spilling out the contents of his briefcase.

“Damn, that’s the third time this week this has happened,” complained Manicote as the two detectives assisted him in picking up the scattered papers.

As they reached the bottom of the Courthouse steps McGarrett stopped when he realized he had forgotten his file. “Damn it, my file is on the table. I’ll have to catch up with you later, John.”

Being a few steps behind McGarrett, Dan almost collided with his friend. “I’ll get it, Steve,” he offered. Not waiting for a reply, he sprinted back into the building.

File in hand Dan headed for the doors. At the last row of chairs, he noticed a folder under one of the chairs. Retrieving it, he checked the contents. It was one of Manicote’s files on the Conner’s case.

“Steve, I found one of John’s files,” he said having caught up with McGarrett.

McGarrett confirmed his detective’s discovery. “Look, I’ve got a meeting with the Governor. Take these to John,” he said handing the file back to Dan, not realizing he had handed him the wrong folder.

“Sure thing Steve. After that, I’m taking off for Kono’s.”

“Are you two going surfing again?”

“Yeah.”

With a heavy sigh, McGarrett shook his head. He never did approve of this dangerous sport. “You know I don’t need to tell you to be careful,” McGarrett reminded him.

“Yeah, I know.”

“I’ll see you both tomorrow then,” McGarrett said as he departed.

Dan watched his friend depart before he left to deliver the folder to Manicote.

He knocked as he entered the lawyer’s office. “Hi John. Steve asked me to bring this over to you,” he said handing him the folder. “I found this under one of the chairs. Steve told me to bring it over to you.”

“That’s great. Except there’s one little problem here,” Manicote said after looking in the file.

“What’s that?”

“This isn’t mine. It’s Steve’s.” Manicote handed the open file back to Dan with an amused smile.

“Huh?” Dan looked at the contents and groaned. “Oh no, Steve’s got yours then and he’s over at the Governor’s office.”

“Well, thanks for the effort and I really do need my own file.”

“I’ll be right back.” With that, Dan quickly left his office.

Manicote shook his head a little as he tried to suppress a chuckle as he watched the young detective depart.

“Peg, is Steve still in with the Governor?” Dan asked hopefully.

The forty-five year old secretary smiled at the appearance of the youngest member of the Five-0 team. “I’m sorry Danny, you just missed him.”

“Damn,” he said under his breath as he excused himself to begin the trip back to his office. “Steve’s done this on purpose. I know he has,” he said silently to himself.

Dan dodged around friends and tourists as he ran across the Palace Park on his way to the Iolani Palace. Taking three steps at a time, he quickly ascended the koa wood steps.

“Jenny, is Steve in?” he said loudly as he entered the office.

Startled by his abrupt entrance, Jenny lost her hold on the coffee cup, spilling the contents. “Yes, he’s in,” she said a bit testily as she quickly grabbed a few napkins to clean up the mess.

“Opps, sorry Jenny,” he said skirting around the widening area of wet napkins.

Surprised to see his young friend, Steve looked up perplexity. “I thought you were going surfing?”

“I was, but you gave me the wrong file,” Dan said a little out of breath putting the file in the middle of McGarrett’s desk pad.

McGarrett raised his eyebrows in surprise, then reached over to the file tray and retrieved the file he had just put there. “So I did,” he said handing it over to Dan. “Sorry.”

“Not a problem,” Dan said as he quickly left the office.

“Brudha, I didn’t think you was gona make it,” Kono said after paddling up to Dan who was now waiting for another wave.

“Kono, I’m positive now.  Steve will do anything to keep me from enjoying this. I’m positive he somehow made Manicote’s briefcase to open up and then deliberately switched files on me.”

“Nah, he no do that bro.”

“I don’t know, it sure seemed like it to me.”

“Well, now you here.”

“Yeah,” Without another word he started to swim out to catch the next wave.

“Hey, wait for me,” Kono said, knowing all to well that his friend was probably right.  McGarrett hated it when they took on the biggest challenge on the islands, the mighty waves of the North Shore
