Something Special

By Terri Whitman © 10-25-0110-25-01

The verbal fight Maureen Simmons had with her boss earlier that day had left her emotionally and physically drained. The strain of this emotional roller coaster wasn’t helping her fall asleep on this very warm and humid night.

The limits of her endurance had finally been reach with her boss’s over bearing attitude. He also had two very annoying habits that bothered her, that of clicking his dentures and wiping his hand through his oily hair before he ran them though his beard. Unhappy with the unrealistic demands of her boss and her demeaning job, she now seriously considered quitting her present job.

The Honolulu Harbor Bar was a favorite of Maureen and Amy Chechourka, her friend. After their last shift that day they decided to stop for a few drinks. There she hoped to dull her senses enough so she didn’t care. When her friend bid her goodbye after two drinks, she sat there alone with only herself to talk to and she didn’t like that.

Finally several hours later, she left the bar and headed home. But once there she was unable to relax, so she decided to take a sleeping pill. She knew it was a little dangerous to mix the two items together, but she didn’t care. All she wanted was to fall asleep. A depression started to build within her when it became apparent to her that neither drink nor pill was going to work for her. That’s when she decided to take a short swim in the warm ocean.

The breezes were almost non-existent that night. As she walked out on the deserted beach behind her home she noted that the waves were flat. The warm water felt so soothing to her as she began her swim. Being an avid swimmer all her life had given her a strong stroke and soon she was well out into the deep ocean. She wasn’t thinking about her high alcohol consumption that night or the dangers it posed when combined with the sleeping pill. Neither of these items had started to affect her body or mind.

Maureen had totally lost track of time and distance when her strokes began to weaken. A blissful sleepiness had now taken over her common sense as the combination of the drinks and the pill took full control. She felt no sense of danger to herself as her head bobbed under the waves for the third time. Instead laughter overcame her as she thought of the stupid act her employer had done and how ironic that she wouldn't be there to see the bastard get his in the end. Soon a euphoric feeling of calm came over her as the warm ocean water lulled her drugged brain and allowed her to slip into unconsciousness.

Doctor Bergman had just finished his examination of the dead unidentified woman who had been found floating face down in Waimai Bay that morning. The grim expression on his face clearly showed his disgust at such a waste of life from the high consumption of alcohol and drugs. He had already recorded three drowning deaths that month each caused by this potentially lethal cocktail. He did note a startlingly clear commonality in each of the deaths. All three victims had used the same brand of prescription drug.

He silently shook his head as he signed the final paperwork, which released the body to next of kin. His department would hold it here for a week and if no one claimed it the State would pick up the expenses for her final resting place.

Out of a long-standing habit, he glanced at his watch and realized that in twenty minutes Steve McGarrett and Duke Lukela, two good friends of his, would arrive. This meeting was to plan a surprise birthday party for the youngest member of the Hawaii Five-0 team.

McGarrett wasn’t one to have elaborate parties, especially if it drew attention to himself. But this year he decided to give one for his second-in-command. He had assigned Ben Kokua to keep an eye on the birthday boy as the other members of the office engaged in their plans to pull this party off.

Crime in the Hawaiian Islands had slowed down some and Five-0 had only one active case going. Danny and Ben were to keep an eye on Rowdy Imura, their current suspect. McGarrett knew they had enough evidence to nail this drug pusher but the person he really wanted was Rowdy’s supplier, thus the need for the stake out.

"Sorry we’re late Doc," McGarrett said as he and Duke walked into the mortician’s office.

"You late? Steve, if you were ever on time I’d have to give you a complete physical," teased the aging doctor as he finished with the file on the dead woman.

Duke smiled at the doctor’s come back because he knew his boss was seldom on time for these meetings. "Doc, he had to arrange for Ben to watch over our birthday boy and has them both out on a stake out right now," he informed the M. E.

Bergman frowned at this information because he remembered the last time when those two were on a stake out. Both men ended up getting shot, which resulted in a lengthy hospital stay for Danny. "You better hope that neither one of them gets hurt this time Steve or we might have to relocate the party here at the hospital," he warned the tall dark hair man who had picked up the file he had just finished.

McGarrett gave the file a quick glance over before closing it up and placing it back on the M. E.’s desk. He didn’t think much about the death of this woman, but something inside his memory was kicking off alarms.

"He hadn’t better get hurt," Duke warned teasingly as he looked at his boss.

"What’s your complaint Duke, just because you had to pull double duty for a week by eating Danny’s donut for him," McGarrett came back with a teasing smile on his face. "Danno and Ben shouldn’t have any problems. All they’re supposed to do is to watch where Rowdy goes and whom he meets. I expressly ordered them ‘no gun play’ on this stake out," he informed the M. E. "I see that the Governor and John haven’t arrived yet either, so I guess I’m not that late."

"He called me and informed me he and the Governor are still stuck in a meeting with Senator Billings and as soon as they’re done, the two of them will get here," Bergman told him.

There were eight people involved in arranging this party and they were teamed together with specific assignments. Ben and Duke were to help keep Danny busy and out of the office as much as possible, so small jobs like this stake out were sort of arranged to keep Danny busy. Chin Ho and Jenny were busy with the invitations to various people, both by phone and by mail and arranging their reservations at the various hotels if needed.

The group had planed on having the party in the banquet room at the Ilikai Hotel, so Manicote and the Governor were both busy clearing away the last of the red tape. Bergman’s part in this was to supply a secluded place to meet for the meetings where there was very little chance of the young detective happening upon. McGarrett, who was paying for the majority of the items needed, had taken on the duties of arranging for the food, decorations and the live band. Because of some of the invitees were in the upper branches of the government, the Five-0 chief would need to implement a moderate security plan for their safety. Thankfully things had been moving along smoothly and as far as anyone knew, Danny had no idea about it.

Fifteen minutes later, the Governor and Manicote walked into Bergman’s office. "Sorry Steve, but Bob just didn’t see a point that John was trying to make on the newest of our laws I signed last week and we had a devil of a time explaining it clear enough to him," Governor Jameson explained after he sat down in the remaining chair in front of Bergman’s desk.

McGarrett smiled at the thought of them trying to explain anything to ‘that’ Senator. He had had several past run ins with this Senator before when he was forced to take a stand against the organized gambling contingents trying to get a foothold onto Hawaiian lands. He knew somehow that Senator Billings was link to one of the organized crime bosses.

"Governor, I doubt if you or anyone else would ever be able to explain things clear enough for him," McGarrett replied with a clear tone the expressed his opinion of the man in question.

"I don’t know how this guy ever got elected in the first place, but I know I sure didn’t vote for him," Duke added with the same feelings.

Bergman had stayed out of this little debate because he felt the same as the Five-0 officers. "Gentlemen, can we get back to what this meeting is all about? We have more important items to discuss then if Billings IQ matches his limited form of intelligence or not," he stated flatly. This was exactly what was needed to break the tension and get everyone back into the party planning mood and his comment had all of them grinning and laughing.

*****

Danny and Ben had been sitting in the car watching the house where Rowdy had just entered. Both men smiled at each other because Joe Manlanjit, a known gambling crime boss, was the owner of this house. Five-0 had been trying to tie him into the drug market in Waikiki for the last two years and to sweeten the pot, they were positive he had connections with a government official.

"Steve is going to love this Ben," Danny told his friend.

"He sure is, Danny. You goina to call this in?" Ben asked as his eyes narrowed gleefully as he quickly snapped some pictures of their subject as he entered the house.

"Yeah, now all we need to do is get a judge to authorize us to tap into his phone and plant some bugs and we’ll have enough proof to get a conviction this time," Danny commented as he picked up the mic to in call this bit of luck. "Central this is Williams, Five-0, patch me through to McGarrett," he told the dispatcher.

It seemed like a long time before McGarrett answered back, "What’s up Danno?"

"Steve, Ben and I have followed Rowdy over to Manlanjit’s home," Danny told him in a satisfied voice. "How about getting Judge Fellows to issue a court order to allow us to place some bugs and a tap on his line? This meeting with Rowdy should be enough proof that he’s connected to the recent drug traffic we’re having."

McGarrett’s eyes narrowed at the thought of closing this case quickly. Hopefully the meeting between Rowdy and Manlanjit would lead them to ridding Hawaii of one of its crime families. "I’ll talk with Manicote on it and see if we can get that court order," he told his impatient sounding detective. "Just keep watching him from a distance Danno and remember, no gun play. If he spots you back off entirely and we’ll stick another tail on him. No since of taking any chances right now," he reminded Danny.

A slight puzzled expression came over Danny face as he turned to Ben who shrugged his shoulders. Their boss could be very hard to figure out sometimes and right now it seemed like he was backing off this case for some reason.

"Maybe he’s got something else in the works, Danny," Ben offered as a possible excuse.

"Could be Ben," Danny replied giving a sigh as he sat back in his car seat with his fingers on his right hand drumming a steady beat on the steering wheel.

Thirty minutes later, Rowdy left the house and returned to his home and didn’t venture out for the rest of the day.

*****

Rowdy Imura had spotted the detectives earlier that morning. ‘What the hell?’ he thought to himself trying to figure out his next step. "I guess I better call Joe and see what he wants to do," he told himself as he walked over to his phone and dialed the number he knew by heart.

The other end rang for several times before a very low and mincing voice answered, "Hello?"

"This is Rowdy, I need to talk to Joe," Rowdy told the voice at the other end and then heard a thump as the phone at the other end was obviously put down on a table.

A few seconds later he heard some footsteps approach the open line. "Rowdy, what’s up?" Joe asked him.

"I was going to come over this morning like planned but I spotted two Five-0 detectives watching the place. How do you want to handle this?" Rowdy responded.

"Which two?" Joe asked immediately alerted to a potential problem.

"I’m not totally sure. I’m pretty sure Williams is one, the other one I haven’t seen before," he replied as he referred to Ben.

‘Five-0 is grasping at straws again. They can’t have nothing on us, not unless Rowdy was careless,’ Joe thought to himself as he tried to come up with a plan. "You best come on over. We’ll talk about what our next steps will be," he told his listener as he tried to think of ways Five-0 might have gotten wise to their set up. ‘If he’s blown this, I’ll personally kill the bastard,’ he though to himself as he hung up the phone wondering if Rowdy’s trustworthiness was all that good.

*****

"John, can you get a hold of Judge Fellows? I need a court order allowing us to plant some bugs in Joe Manlanjit’s and Rowdy Imura’s homes and a tap on their phone lines," McGarrett asked after he finished his call with Danny. "We’ve finally got a connection between Imura and the gambling crime boss in Waikiki, Manlanjit," he concluded with an expectant look on his face.

"I hate to pour ice water over your hot lead Steve, but just how does Rowdy Imura visiting Manlanjit’s constitute proof of association other then a casual visit? What other substantial proof do you have?" Manicote asked, his own mind thinking along the same lines as McGarrett’s but also thinking of how it will be provable in a court of law.

"I agree with John, Steve. A visit like this only means right now that he knows him and not that they’re working together," the Governor added.

McGarrett was now warmed up to his subject as he started to explain the plausible proof of the two men’s connection. "First of all John, we know that Manlanjit has been pushing for getting gambling legalize here in Hawaii and he’s doing that through Senator Billings. It’s also public record that Senator Billings has accepted money from Manlanjit for his campaign during the elections.

"Two, we know that until just recently, Rowdy was only a small time pusher and pimp, but now he’s gone big time. Unfortunately we’ve been unable to locate his warehouse of drugs or his supplier," McGarrett told them as he started to count on his fingers what they had so far on the case.

"Three, we also have positive proof that Manlanjit has expanded his business here in Honolulu and in Waikiki as far as drug sales and that means he must have someone already will established on his payroll and we know for sure that is Rowdy Imura. And to top it off, his visit today to Manlanjit’s is enough proof to me to demonstrate the need of these items to make the connections even more solid," he finished with his hand now clinched in a fist for more emphasis on his words.

Manicote smiled as he watched McGarrett warm up into his job of convincing him of the need. "Okay Steve, you’ve convinced me. I’ll call Judge Fellows for you," he told him as he walked over to Bergman’s phone and dialed the one judge they knew was above reproach. Twenty minutes later a court clerk delivered the court order to the Five-0 offices.

*****

It was almost 5 PM when Chin Ho Kelley and Marc Caccamo, a plain-clothes HPD officer, pulled up along side of Danny’s car at a Waffle Ice Cream restaurant. This was their arranged meeting place for the evening. "Hey Danny, how’s it going?" Chin Ho asked with a smile on his face and his pipe in his hand.

"Boring Chin. We’ve had to sit here all day. Rowdy didn’t leave his home once he came back from Manlanjit’s," Danny told the oriental member of the team.

"Yeah, I’ve been racking my brains trying to think of things to pass the time," Ben added with a smile that showed he brilliant white teeth. "It was better then to listen to this guy here snore," he teased his friend.

"What do you mean ‘my snoring’, I’m not the one who fell asleep and dropped his fruit juice down the front of ‘my’ shirt," Danny teased back as he held up the paper bag filled with the obviously used paper napkins.

"I told you I was examining the cars ceiling remember and the cup just slipped out of my hand. It’s either that or you bumped my elbow at that time," Ben replied in defense of himself.

"I knew it. I told Steve that putting you two together was a bad plan. Just like the time he teamed Danny and Kono together and we found them both asleep in the car after midnight," Chin Ho said knowing that that little incident could still cause the youngest member of the team to blush some.

"Kono was a previous member of our team and he and Danny use to beg Steve for the late night stake outs," Chin Ho said as he filled his partner for the night in on had happened before. "What really happened was that they had ordered some coffee and someone in the restaurant slipped a Mickey in on them and it knocked them both out cold. They didn’t wake up until Danny heard Steve pounding furiously on his window," he said with a smile as he took a puff on his pipe.

Ben’s eyebrows raised up at this little bit if information regarding his partner and then he broke into a grin and started to laugh when he realized how red Danny’s face had become. "You didn’t tell me about that Bruddah, but then again anyone who can manage to lock himself in an HPD holding cell twice," he said between breaths.

"I told you Ben, the first time the door closed by itself when I accidentally swung it open to hard and it bounced back on me before I could catch it and the second time Steve did it. He thought I was right behind him when he had finished talking to Peters," Danny reminded him.

Officer Caccamo hadn’t said anything during this time but had watched the friendly banter going on between the three men. It was very clear to him that these men were good friends and knew how to tease each other without hurting anyone’s feelings. "I’m glad you three are friends. It sounds like you give each other some good ribbing at times," he said as he wondered what the night would hold for him with such a partner.

"We are Marc. This is how it tends to get this time of year, too many birthdays and other forms of celebrations going on in the office," Chin Ho told him with a chuckle. "You know, first Halloween, then Thanksgiving and Christmas, not to mention four people who have birthdays during those months," he added with a smile.

"Did Steve say who’s going to relieve you two tomorrow morning?" Ben asked because he knew that Chin Ho was going to be in a meeting later that morning with Steve to plan out more items for the party.

"Yes, Chief Dan has assigned an additional unit for the next shift," Caccamo told him.

"That means you’ll be coming in late tomorrow Chin?" Danny asked him worried that he wouldn’t have his report to go on as he complied more information on Rowdy and Manlanjit.

"I’ll leave my report on your desk before I head home Danny. Steve’s cleared it so I can have tomorrow off as I’ve got to take Mia and Tilda to the doctor’s tomorrow," Chin Ho told him. Even though this statement was wasn’t totally true, he needed the free time to arrange for the reservation in at the Hilton set up for Danny’s Aunt Clara who would arrive later that morning from New York. "Well, we best get over there or Steve will have our hides," he said as he started the engine and pulled out of the parking spot.

*****

With Chief Dan’s assistance, McGarrett secured enough HPD officers to act as security for the party the next night at the Ilikai. Several weeks ago, the invitations had been mailed out and now the RSVP’s were coming in and for those guests who had to flying in, Jenny made sure they would be met at the airport and transported to the various hotels where they would be staying.

So far they had been successful on keeping this information from Danny, but McGarrett had a feeling that his young friend knew something was going on. He had been kept informed on Danny’s nightly activities from Cora Lee, Danny’s current girlfriend.

*****

Rowdy looked out his window and didn’t see any parked cars near by. ‘Maybe I was wrong. Maybe they were watching someone else,’ he thought to himself as he stepped back away from the window. With this small bit of relief he decided to leave do make his rounds in Waikiki.

The bright red mustang’s engine sounded sweet to Rowdy as he drove down the H1 Highway towards Waikiki. He had a few stops to make along the way before he dropped in at his girlfriends apartment.

Before he stopped at the warehouse, he drove by a few times to see if anything strange was near it. What he didn’t see was two cars, Danny’s long sleek Mercury and Chin’s dark brown Ford. Just as Chin had pulled up to where he was going to park, he noticed Rowdy pulling out and driving down the neighborhood street.

"Central, patch me through to Danny Williams," Chin Ho told the dispatcher, as he made a left turn onto the street and followed the red car at a discreet distance. He was sure that Rowdy hadn’t recognized him or realized that he was being followed.

"Chin, what’s up?" Danny asked as he responded to Chin’s call.

"Our little meeting has allowed Rowdy to think it’s safe to leave," Chin Ho told him. "He’s headed towards Honolulu right now on the H1 Freeway," he added as he put two cars between him and his subject.

"Okay Chin, we’ll pull in behind you," Danny told him as he drove back towards the freeway. He was soon behind Chin Ho as they followed their subject through the heart of the business section of Honolulu.

*****

Rowdy glanced frequently glanced at his rear view mirror, but the late afternoon lighting muted the colors of the cars so he was unable to tell if any of them were the one he had seen earlier. After he had driven by the warehouse for the third time, he turned into the alley way between the buildings and parked his car.

Quickly he exited his car and walked over to the only door located in the back. He knocked on the door three times and then repeated the knocks but with a pause between the second and third knock. This was the signal to those inside that he was there.

"The boss is waiting for you in his office," the burly man told him as he held the door open for him and relocked it back up after he closed it.

"Thanks Kimo," Rowdy replied as he walked over to the stairs that led to the office on the second floor. ‘Joe was smart when he hired that bruin of a guy. He’s big,’ he told himself as he reached the door and opened it up.

Danny and Chin Ho had parked their cars near the warehouse. "Central, patch me through to McGarrett," Danny said as Chin and Caccamo walked up to his side of the car.

"Danno, what’s going on? I thought you and Ben were headed back to the office," McGarrett said with an inquiring tone.

"We were but Chin radioed me and told me that Rowdy had taken off just as he pulled up to start his watch. We’ve followed him to the warehouses near the Waikiki harbor," Danny informed him.

"Okay, remember, just watch. I’ll have a team go over to Rowdy’s now and plant those bugs," McGarrett told him.

Danny was about to reply when they heard a series of shots coming from inside the warehouse. "Got to go Steve, shots have been fired. Send us some back up," he told his boss and then took off running with the other three towards the back of the warehouse.

"Danno! Danno!" McGarrett yelled into the mic but he got no reply. "Jenny, call Central. I need four complete units to meet up with Danno at the warehouses at the Waikiki Harbor," he told her as he ran out of his office telling Duke to follow him.

*****

Ben exited the car and immediately followed the others. "Danny, remember, Steve said no gun play," he said as a reminder of their boss’s instructions as he stopped behind him. He knew McGarrett wanted to keep him out of harms way until at least after the party and this wasn’t part of the plan.

"Don’t worry Ben. I’ll only shoot if I’m shot at," Danny told him with a quick smile as he tried the door.

None of them were prepared for the door to open and have two men run out. The first one was Kimo, a monster of a man and he didn’t stop as he plowed into and over Danny. Being a lot smaller then Kimo, Danny went flying back into Ben. Both of them hit the ground with a thud, but Danny hit it harder and there was a sickening thunk when his head hit the ground.

Officer Caccamo reacted quickly and tripped up the giant with a well placed foot. When Kimo hit the ground, the wind was temporarily knocked out of him. This gave the HPD officer time to get him handcuffed.

Joe Manlanjit was directly behind his body guard and as he exited the building he came face to face with the muzzle of Chin Ho’s 38. "Freeze Manlanjit," Chin Ho told him with a smile as he twirled the man around and forced him against the metal exterior wall of the warehouse. Quickly he put his handcuffs on his prisoner and then led him over to his car. "Be a good boy and don’t move," the oriental detective told him as he shoved him to the ground.

"I’ll watch him Chin," Caccamo told him. "You best go and check out Danny. He hasn’t moved since he hit the ground," he suggested as he not to gently force the giant body guard to sit down next to his boss.

Ben had recovered quickly from his collision with Danny and was holding a cloth to the back of Danny’s head. "Chin, get an ambulance, Danny’s been hurt," he told him with a worried tone. "Steve’s going to kill me. It was my job to keep Danny safe,’ he thought to himself as he gave a silent prayer that the injury wasn’t too bad.

Within a few minutes, McGarrett’s powerful Mercury pulled up with a squeal of tires. Almost before the car had stopped, he had exited it and ran over to the downed officer. "Danno!"

"He hit his head Steve when he fell," Ben told him. "We never even got inside. That man over there came rushing out and plowed into us," the Samoan detective said as he brought his boss up to date.

"You were to keep him safe," roared McGarrett as he turned his built up anger out on him.

"Easy Steve, things just happened too quickly," Chin Ho told him as he pulled his boss away a few steps so he could cool off. "None of us had a chance to get out of their way when they came out."

McGarrett was about to snap back as him when the ambulance and the other units arrived. The scene turned chaotic for a while as Chin Ho and Duke went inside the warehouse with the extra man power.

McGarrett stayed with Danny until the ambulance left and then he turned back to the rest of his men. "I’ll be at the hospital. Ben, come with me," he ordered briskly as he walked back to his car. Ben barely got inside when the Mercury took off with tires spraying out some of the loose dirt and gravel as the car took off down the road. He knew he was in for a chewing out.

*****

Ben explained all of what had gone one during the day and at the warehouse. McGarrett listened tentatively as his detective continued with his report. When they pulled into the parking lot the Five-0 chief’s Irish temper had started to cool off.

McGarrett mood had changed for the better by the time he walked into Danny’s room and found that Doctor Bergman had just started his examination of Danny. He had several things on his mind at the moment and wanted to over an idea about the dead woman found the day before. The lab team had found some unusual capsules in the woman’s office and when they dusted it for fingerprints, Joe’s prints were on the inside of the bottle.

"Steve. I thought for sure you would here by now," Bergman said as the Five-0 chief entered the room.

"Sorry I’m late but I went to look for you at your office because I wanted to ask you want you had found out anything about that dead woman," McGarrett asked, his mind thinking of several things at the same time and how they all related together.

"I take it you found out who she was then?" Bergman stated as finished up some paperwork on Danny’s exam.

"Yeah, the prints told us that she was Maureen Simmons, age 36 and a nurse at one of the smaller retirement homes near Queens. You said she died of drowning, but that she also had a high amount of alcohol and a sleeping pill," McGarrett told the M. E.

"Yes, but there was something very different about this drug. It had an added ingredient in it," Bergman replied and then continued.

Both detectives looked at each other for a moment before either of them could say something.

"You’re saying the pills had been tampered with?" Danny asked as he tried to sit up on the edge of the bed.

"Yes. Several of the pills had been opened and some Secanol added," Bergman told him as he gently pushed the younger man back into the bed.

"Whew, and you’re saying that this had to have been done deliberate?" McGarrett asked.

"No other way for the stuff to have gotten into it," Bergman told him. "And Steve…the other two women had the same drug in their system.

"Steve weren’t those other women part of Rowdy’s group?" Danny asked his boss as a thought popped in his head at a possible connection.

McGarrett had begun to walk around the room snapping his fingers as he thought. "Right Danno. Maybe this was Manlanjit’s way of making Rowdy agree to deal with him, by killing off some of his girls," he said, his eyes narrowing now as he pictured what had taken place.

"But how does this Simmons woman fit in? Was she one of his group too?" Bergman asked.

"Whose name is one the prescription?" Danny asked when he realized the same thing.

"Hold on. I’ll call Che Fong, he should have the bottle still," McGarrett said and went over to the phone next to Danny’s bed. The other two men listened patiently as McGarrett questioned the forensics’ expert. When he was done there was an even broader smile on his face.

"Maureen Simmons was a roommate to two of the other women who died. The bottle of pills were obtained by a Ruby Hong from a Dr. Rowdy Imura."

Bergman’s eyes shot up at this information. "Dr. Imura?"

"Yeah and guess who’s handwriting was on the prescriptions…Joe Manlanjit," McGarrett told them. "And to top it off, guess who took the prescriptions to be filled...our one and only Senator Bob Billings."

"Great, so we have our loop then Steve," Danny commented as he tried to get up again only to be gently pushed back into bed but this time by his friend.

"Yeah, hook, line and sinker Danno. We can clear the Islands of one more drug family and racketeer, along with getting rid of a bad congressman to boot," McGarrett told him as he dialed the Palace to have the Senator picked up and charged along with the rest. He then called Manicote and filled him in on what had happened and that Danny would be staying in the hospital until tomorrow afternoon.

"Please stay in bed Danny. You’re going to need to stay here until at least tomorrow," Bergman told the increasingly frustrated man as he winked at McGarrett.

Danny’s temper had started to become short when he found out he had to stay in the hospital. "Come on Doc, I feel fine," he told Bergman as he again tried to set on the edge of the bed.

"Danny, will you please stay in the bed. That was a bad fall you took and you whacked the back of your head pretty hard, hard enough that it knocked you out at the scene. I want to keep you for observation for at least until tomorrow," Bergman told him as he finished writing down the instructions for the nurses. "Then if everything is fine, I’ll release you, but until then lay back and relax," he ordered as he left with a smile on his face.

Unhappily, Danny laid back onto the bed and picked up the magazine that McGarrett had brought him earlier that morning. "At least Steve brought me something interesting to read," he said as he humpft to himself and rubbed the still sore spot on his head as the two men left his hospital room.

The next morning Bergman came in and checked on Danny’s condition. "Looks like I can call Steve to come and pick you up," he informed his patient. "Just take it easy for the next few days Danny and you should be fine."

"Really Doc, I could have done this earlier. Steve would have allowed me to take a few days off you know," Danny replied happily as he stood up and walked over to the closet to get his street clothes.

"I know, but I wanted to make sure," Bergman told him just before he exited the room.

Twenty minutes later there was a knock on the door and McGarrett walked in. "Doc says you can go home and that you’re to take a few days off," he told his young friend who had stood up now and was ready to leave.

"Yeah. A few days off and then I can go back to work," Danny repeated as he followed his boss out of the hospital and down to the waiting car.

"Ben, Chin and Duke finished up with the warehouse. Looks like Joe killed Rowdy because he got nervous about their joining forces and wanted to back out of the deal. They got him booked for murder one, just to start," McGarrett said as he filled his second-in-command in on what had happened the day before.

"Do you mind telling me what it was that hit me?" Danny asked as he again rubbed the back of his head and tried to remember what had hit him.

"Joe’s bodyguard, Kimo," McGarrett told him with a smile as he watched the smaller man cringe a little at the thought of being ran over by that solid wall of flesh.

"Ow!" Danny replied, "that’s not a man, that a giant bull. I don’t even think Kono could have survived a hit from him."

McGarrett smiled and gave a light chuckle at his friend’s description of Kimo Lahani, Manlanjit’s bodyguard. "Chin and Duke went over to the Senator’s office right after I called them and arrested him. By the time they got him back to the Palace, he had told them the whole sorted story. Seems Joe had intended to only use Rowdy so he could gain power in Waikiki in the drug and prostitution business. He never did intend on having a partnership with him. He was also blackmailing Billings into pushing this gambling interest in through the Senate. It seems that Billings owed Manlanjit a lot of money from a bad gambling debt. To clear the debt he was to push to make gambling legal in Hawaii. If it had passed then Joe would have complete control over that part of Oahu," McGarrett informed him as he too the exit to Britannia Blvd.

"How did he expect it to pass the House of Representatives and then get the Governor to sign it?" Danny asked.

"He couldn’t answer that. The Senate Ethics Committee is now also looking into other charges to file against him," McGarrett added.

"I bet he was surprised and, I hope, humiliated when the handcuffs were put on him," Danny said with a smile and secretly wished he had been there for the collar.

"Duke told me that when the handcuffs were put on the Senator fainted and landed on top of Ben almost knocking him out, so you almost had a roommate for the day," McGarrett told him with a smile.

Both men chuckled at that.

"Before I take you home, I’ve got to stop by the Ilikai for a moment Danno. I’ve got someone I want you to meet," McGarrett told him as he pulled into the parking lot of the famed hotel. "This way, it’s a short cut to the back where he’s at," he said after they reached one of the banquet room and held the door open for his friend.

Danny didn’t know what to expect but obediently followed his boss through the maze of people. When they got to the room it was dark and it took a few moments for their eyes to semi-adjust to the darkness.

"Where’s the light switch Steve? I can’t see anything," Danny asked as he stood there.

All of a sudden the room was ablaze with lights and the hidden guests came out of the side doors of the room yelling "Happy Birthday Danny!" In the lead of the group were Aunt Clara and Jenny who gave the startled man a warm hug. Among the guest were Kono Kalakaua, Chin Ho’s entire family, Duke’s wife, the Governor and his wife, Judge Fellows, the others from the Five-0 office and from HPD, and Cora Lee – his girlfriend. To their right was a table heaping with presents and along the back wall was a table filled with food and beverages. Soon the band started playing and everyone sang along with it to wish him a happy birthday.

"I’m…surprised," Danny started to exclaim but he was almost speechless. "How did you do this? I knew something was going on because you guys would change the subject quickly whenever I came near you," he asked in amazement once he got over the original shock.

"You know how you’re always giving Steve a big party," Ben started to explain to the very blushing birthday boy. "Well Steve wanted to give you one. He got us all involved in this so we could pull this off," he told his friend as he lightly slapped Danny on the back and shook his hand. "Happy Birthday Danny."

"So you’re at the bottom of this, aren’t you Steve?" Danny asked when he turned back to his boss who as stepped back to allow the others to congratulate the birthday boy.

McGarrett gave a broad grin and said, "Yeah, I had to think of something special for you this year."

"Thanks Steve," Danny replied as he shook McGarrett’s hand. "Yeah, this is something special."
