Epilog to ‘Once Upon A Time’

Happily Ever After

By Terri Whitman © 2-16-07

Satisfied at seeing the quack doctor’s defense destroyed in court, McGarrett staunchly walked out of the courtroom and down the hall. The painfully hurt feelings expressed on his sister’s face tore at him. He knew, even if she never forgave him, he had brought a final justice to this case.

But Maryanne and Tom had followed him out of the building and before he could get to the car, she had called out to him. Tears of relief and appreciation flowed from her eyes as they took each other into their arms comforting each other wordlessly. Tom stood close by and when they separated, he shook McGarrett’s hand in appreciation.

After placing the keys up on the borrowed car’s visor, McGarrett turned to walk out of the parking lot. At the sidewalk, he hailed a cab. Giving the driver his sister’s address, he sat back.

It’s obvious Tom must have been at his wits end during all of this. Thankfully, this didn’t destroy their marriage. The inter turmoil he felt during this whole case had eaten at him from the start.

“Keep the meter running will you. I won’t be that long,” McGarrett instructed the driver. Getting an affirmative nod, he went into his sister’s home to gather his belongings.

Needing a ticket home, he looked up the number of the airport in the phone book. With the call placed and a return ticket confirmed, he then placed a call to the District Attorney’s office to let him know where the borrowed car was.

With the calls concluded, McGarrett was in the middle of leaving a note for his sister when he heard a noise outside. It was immediately followed by the sound of a vehicle pulling away. Leaving the note, he started to walk over to the door when it suddenly opened.

“Oh, good, you’re still here,” Tom said stepping in.

“We were afraid we were going to miss you,” Maryann said giving her brother a hug.

Mystified and unsure of how they felt, McGarrett returned the affection. “I wasn’t sure you wanted me around and I really do need to get back.”

Smiling with a fake show of indignation, Maryann hugged him again as Tom offered his hand. “You are always welcome Steve.”

“Besides, your sister would never forgive me if we didn’t see you off.”

“I was in the middle of leaving you a note, then I was going to take the cab to the airport. My flight is in three hours.” He handed Tom the unfinished note who read it then gave it to his wife.

“We can take you there, right Tom?”

“Sure thing, but we’d better get going if we’re to make it on time. Traffic at this time of day is really heavy,” Tom said picking up McGarrett’s luggage.

The trip to the airport gave them a chance to talk about how things were going with McGarrett’s life. McGarrett purposely left out some of the more dangerous moments in his life.

Upon reaching the airports, McGarrett collected his airline ticket and checked in his luggage. Having made the trip in plenty of time, they found they had enough time for one a last meal together.

They were enjoying their coffee when they heard the boarding announcement for McGarrett’s flight.

“Well, keep yourself safe,” said Tom who had insisted on paying for the meal.

“And don’t make it such a long time before you get back. You know you’re always welcome Stevie,” reminded Maryann. Giving her brother another hug, she walked with the two most important men in her life as they walked back to the airlines.

“How about you two coming to Hawaii some day?”

“We’ll have to see. My job doesn’t allow me much time off, but we’ll do what we can.” Tom stood back to allow the two one last moment together.

Another boarding call meant the end of the short and abrupt visit, one where emotions ran high for the length of the stay.

Giving Tom one last handshake and his sister a heart filled hug, McGarrett walked through the doorway leading to the ramp. At the top of the ramp he stopped and turned around. Seeing the two, he waved before entering the cabin.

Sitting down in a window seat, he looked out to see if he could see his only relatives. Seeing them, he waved one last time, not knowing if they saw him or not.

“Aloha, Sis. Aloha.”
