Fourth of July By Terri Whitman © 7-4-03 “Boss, it’s getting late. You going to leave soon?” Jenny inquired after she had straightened up her desk at the end of the day. “Huh? I’m sorry Jenny. I was just standing here thinking,” McGarrett told her as he leaned against the open lanai doors. “You still thinking of the Tyler kid?” she asked. “Yeah. I can’t get him out of my mind.” “You did what you could for him,” she said as she joined him. “It’s a shame about his parents.” “Yeah. But at least we caught the scum who killed them. Tyler’s going to have it rough for a while, what with no family now,” he said as looked at her. ‘She’s some type of woman. With no family of her own, she tends to take in all the kids of the world,’ he thought to himself. “Kono told me today that he’s doing okay. According to his neighbor, the boy had settled in fine with his family.” Giving an affirmative nod he walked out onto the lanai. “Is Kono going to bring him to the festivities tonight?” “That’s the plan. I’ve fixed the potato salad you like and a key lime pie. You still planning on bringing your Kona coffee you like so much?” “Yes, along with other beverages. Did you get the other stuff I asked for?” “Yes sir, all the fixings for the bar-bo-que. It’s nice of you to pay for all the meat.” McGarrett turned to his diminutive secretary. Proficient to a fault. He knew he seldom thanked her for all the hard work she did for him. The way she took care of him and the others made it seem like they were family. And in a way they were because they spent more time here at work than with their own families. Their ohana was tight as it should be. “I’ve checked about getting him into the University. He’ll be able to continue with his studies in law.” “Ah, a budding lawyer then,” she said thinking back to how interested Tyler had been in helping McGarrett capture and then with Manicote’s success in getting the killer convicted of murder. “Actually, he told me of his interest in becoming a Five-0 detective some day,” McGarrett replied with a smile. “Great. He’ll have two excellent roll models to follow then in both you and Danny.” “Speaking of Danno, where has he been all day?” His young second-in-command has requested the afternoon off to do something. When questioned about this, the young detective had skirted around the answer saying only that he had something special to do for a friend. ***** The sun was just touching the horizon and a soft ocean breeze had finally cooled off the city. The beachfront area of the King Kamehameha club became the meeting place for the Five-0 members, their families and friends to assemble for the fireworks that night. Thanks to Danny William’s efforts and cajolement, the club agreed to supply the Five-0 party with the needed tables, chairs and grill to cook the meat. Soon the delectable aroma of steaks, hamburgers and hot dogs drifted on the air. “So that’s what you’ve been up to this afternoon,” McGarrett said after he finally caught up with his friend. “It took some doing. Thankfully Higgins owned me a favor, so I called in the chip for tonight’s doings.” While he didn’t condone the friendship between his detective and Thomas Magnum, the PI staying at Robin’s Nest, he did respect Higgins, the caretaker of Robin’s property and Rick, the manager of the Club. Right now some twenty kids surrounded Dan and Rick as they raided the tables, nibbling from the chips and snacks made available for their enjoyment. “Looks like Dan’s having fun,” Manicote said as he walked over to the Five-0 chief. “I never knew you knew how to cook so good Steve,” he said having taken a bite of his third hamburger. “And you thought you knew everything about me,” McGarrett replied with a slight grin. The two of them chatted for a bit as McGarrett tended to the various meats now crowding each other for room on the grill. As McGarrett cooked each man remembered various other fourth of July’s that hadn’t been so happy. Soon all the meat was cooked. With plates full of good food, the group sat around waiting for the evening show to start. Tyler had expressed his thanks to McGarrett for helping him get the scholarship. The young man also thanked Kono for finding him a place to stay. “No problem bro,” Kono replied. By that time the first explosion occurred. The Fourth of July celebration had started with a bang. McGarrett stood along the sidelines. His attention divided between young Tyler, his extended ohana and the brilliant pyrotechnics displayed that night. Jenny had seen him move to the side. Quietly she made her way over to him with a cup of his coffee that he so much enjoyed. Sensing someone approaching him from the rear, he turned around. “Thanks Jenny,” he said after accepting the beverage. “Have I ever said how much I appreciate your efforts?” Smiling, Jenny didn’t say anything, only nodded her head. “Jenny, you’re a jewel you know. You make the office much more brilliant than all these fireworks combined.” Blushing now at his praise, she smiled back at him again. “Working for you has always been my pleasure Boss.” McGarrett slipped an arm around her and gave her a light squeeze. Together they stood there watching the show. “Happy fourth of July Steve,” “You too.” PAU Happy Fourth of July Everyone. Have a safe and sane one as we celebrate the birthday of our Country.
