Dilemma By Terri Whitman © 2003A sigh escaped McGarrett as tendrils of steaming hot water cascaded down his battle torn and worn body. It felt great to him. To get the full treatment, he turned his left side into the steaming spray. When the water hit a raw area on the back of his shoulder, he winced and uttered a pain-filled moan. Grabbing the ivory, he worked up a thick pile of lather onto his washcloth. Gently he rubbed the cloth over his arms and washboard muscled stomach. The chest hairs seemed to help increase the amount of lather as he washed the front of his torso. Stiffly he bent down to continue his shower, washing the accumulated dirt off his darkly haired legs, going over the well defined calf and thigh muscles. Placing a hand on the side of the shower, he leaned into the water, allowing it to rinse the lather from his body. The water had started to cool down, so he decided to get out to dry off. Reaching for the knob, he thought he heard something in another part of his apartment. With a sense of urgency, he quickly turned off the water and prepared to leave the shower. A long white terry cloth towel hung on the near by rack. Picking it up he wrapped it around his waist and walked out of the bathroom. Everything seemed to be okay nothing seemed out of place. McGarrett stood still for another second trying to hear any unusual sounds. Hearing nothing, he stiffly walked back to the bathroom to finish toweling down. Unentwining the towel from his waist, he carefully began to dry off his back. He carefully went over the sore areas. His arms and shoulders tingled with pain as he dried off his hair. McGarrett had just finished hanging up the towel, when he heard another noise. Quickly he stepped out of the bathroom again and went over to his dresser where he kept his service revolver. Soundlessly he walked up to his bedroom door and flattened himself against the wall, the cold veneer prickling the skin on his bare back and buttocks. Cautiously he peered around the doorframe. He had a full view of his front door. He saw it was closed so he knew who ever it was, was still inside his home. The glass curio cabinet was just the right. Through it, he could see the back of a woman standing in front of his couch. Stealthily, he stepped around the cabinet with his gun pointed at the woman. "Freeze!" Startled by the sudden commanding order, the woman jumped and turned around, clutching her throat in fear. "Mary Ann!" No sooner had he uttered her name than he heard the lock on his front door and the door opened admitting another woman. "Hold it!" McGarrett demanded pointing his gun at the new supposed threat. "Oh my God," the second woman said clearly frightened never having had a gun pointed in her direction. "Sasha!" McGarrett said now realizing who this woman was. "Steve!" both women uttered almost at the same time. With the impending danger now gone, McGarrett suddenly realized his ‘other’ problem. "Ah, excuse me ladies," he said lowering his weapon as he shielded his private area and dashed back into his bedroom. "What are you both doing here," McGarrett said quickly tugging on a pair of shorts and a blue aloha shirt. "Well, since you didn’t answer my phone call, I came over to see if dinner was still on for tonight," Sasha immediately replied eyeing the other woman suspiciously. "Sorry Sasha. I just got back from the hospital. Danno and I just caught that arsonist this afternoon," McGarrett replied walking back into his livingroom. "I didn’t have a chance to call you." "Sis, what are you doing here?" he asked very surprised in seeing her. Recovered from her original fright, Mary Ann smiled at her brother and glanced over at Sasha. "I’m sorry I didn’t call ahead of time." "Ah, Steve, maybe I should come back later?" Sasha suggested taking a step back towards the door. "No, you don’t need to leave," Mary Ann said before her brother could reply. She really didn’t feel comfortable right now, not after his pointing his gun at her and her seeing her brother in the buff. The two incidents had shaken her and she felt the need of another woman to calm her nerves. "If you want, I can stay," Sasha said sensing her apprehensions. After a quick glance over at McGarrett, who nodded his agreement, she cautiously sat down. From his sister’s sudden appearance in Hawaii and her body posture, he could tell something was amiss. "Sis, is everything okay?" Sitting down at the end of the couch, Mary Ann gave him a quirky smile. "Can’t I just come on the spur of the moment to visit my big brother?" But the concerned expression on her brother’s face un-nerved her causing her squirm under his scrutiny. Walking over to the couch, McGarrett moved her suitcases over to sat down next to her. "Sis, I happen to know that spur of the moment trips like this is something you and Tom can’t afford. So are you going to tell me the real reason why you’re here?" Sasha, who had never seen this side of McGarrett, started to say something in defense of Mary Ann, but changed her mind when he shook his head upon sensing her intentions. Not realizing she was holding her breath, she exhaled as she sat back trying to relax. Feeling a bit awkward, Mary Ann looked at them both. "Okay if you must know. I’ve left Tom." "You what?" McGarrett said incredulously, looking hard at her and then over to Sasha to see if she had heard the same thing. This stark bit of information floored him because she was the more religiously devote of the two. "Do you mind telling me why?" Mary Ann looked at him trying to get up the courage to tell him the full reason for her visit. "Look Steve, it hasn’t been easy for us since Tommy died. We’ve had a ton of arguments," she blurted out at him, her Irish temper coming to the surface. Stymied at her reluctance to answer, McGarrett put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her into his embrace to comfort her. "I realize that it must have been a difficult time for you, but you don’t just up and leave. Running away from a problem isn’t the way to handle it," he told her softly, resting his head lightly on top of hers. "I’m not running away," Mary Ann said defensively. She knew her brother was right though. She knew she was running away. "Mary Ann, I have a feeling that he’s right. I don’t know what the problem is, but even I can tell you’re upset," Sasha told her in a soft and caring tone of voice. Mary Ann looked over at her then back to her brother. "I never could deceive you," she told him. "As it is, I do have a problem and I don’t know how to handle it." Both McGarrett and Sasha remained quiet but nodded their heads in agreement. "I’m pregnant again, but this time it’s twins," Mary Ann told them, unloading the bombshell information. "Oh my God! You’re kidding, right?" Sasha astonishingly says, surprised and happy at hearing the news. What she didn’t understand though was why Mary Ann was so upset at being pregnant. "Pregnant? Are you sure Sis?" McGarrett asked her surprised at the news. "Does your husband know?" Sasha asked but feeling that she already knew the answer. "Tom does know, doesn’t he," McGarrett asked, now thinking along the same lines as Sasha’s question implied. Wringing her hands nervously, Mary Ann looked down at them. Chewing on her bottom lip, she looked back up at her brother. "No, I haven’t. I don’t know how he’d take it." "You need to let him know," McGarrett told her, his tone coming out a bit stronger then he meant. "I was going to, but we had just had an argument about maybe adopting a child. I don’t know how he’ll react when I tell him this," Mary Ann said still chewing on her lip. "Last year they had lost their one-year son and my sister took it hard," McGarrett briefed Sasha feeling she needed to know a little bit of the problem. He didn’t elaborate further though to spare his sister the anguish. "Yes, I understand," Sasha said nodding. "Look Steve, you and your sister have some family things to talk about. It’s best I leave for now. How about dinner next week?" she said getting up and walking over to the door. McGarrett patted Mary Ann’s knee before he stood up. "I’ll be right back," he told her then walked over to Sasha’s side. "Look honey, I don’t know how long this is going to take. I’ll give you a call," he said stepping out into the hall with her. "Take your time Steve. This is family and she needs you right now," Sasha replied giving him a lingering kiss on his lips. "Just remember, there’s more to that too, so don’t take too long," she said just before she turned around and walked over to the elevator. With a smile on his face, McGarrett turned around and re-entered his apartment. Mary Ann was standing up next to her suitcases so he walked over to her and gave her a heartfelt hug. "It’s good to see you Sis, even if it’s under these circumstances." The two talked for several hours, McGarrett silently listening as she told him of her doubts and fears. Occasionally he would make suggestions on how she could handle the problem she was facing, but he made a point of not pushing his own feelings upon her. Finally he convinced her to call Tom. While she phoned him, he went back into his bedroom and changed into clothing that was more appropriate. He was still fixing the collar of his shirt when he reappeared. A smiling and much more relaxed Mary Ann greeted him. "Good news?" "Oh yes Steve. I told Tom that I’m here and why. He’s going to fly over just as soon as he can get a flight out," she told him deliriously happy now. "That’s great Sis. How about some dinner?" he asked her. Nodding her head in agreement, he picked up the phone and made reservations at Lee’s Chinese Restaurant. The next morning, McGarrett woke up to the smell of fresh brewed coffee and the sound of sizzling bacon. "Good morning. I hope you slept well," he said as he stretched his muscles for he had given his sister his bed and had slept out on the couch. "Good morning Steve. Yes I did. I hope you don’t mind my getting some breakfast," she replied. "Tom’s plane should be landing soon, right?" "Yeah, at 9:15. We should arrive at the airport in plenty of time," he said sitting down to eat. After they finished, Mary Ann cleaned up the kitchen. While she was busy, he called the office to let them know he’d be late and then he called LA to talk with Tom’s employer. "I’ve called my office and had my secretary arranged for a hotel room for the two of you. Then I called Tom’s boss and explained things and clearing it so he can stay here for a week. This way the two of you could finally have your honeymoon, my treat of course," he told her. "You don’t have to do that." "I know, but it’s not very often I get to play big brother to you." What he didn’t tell her is that he also called Sasha back for a date for that night, knowing that his sister would be otherwise occupied for the evening. ***** "That was so nice of you Steve, to give them a honeymoon," Sasha said as she readjusted the bed sheets back over the two of them. "Because of Tom’s job, they weren’t able to take one and then Mary Ann became pregnant. Unfortunately, my nephew had a lot of medical problems right from the beginning and the accumulated medical costs took almost everything they had," McGarrett replied. He thought back to that time, not so long ago, when he helped bring charges against the quack doctor who had become a financial leach on them as she prayed upon his sister’s weakened emotional state. "I’ve got a question for you though," Sasha said rubbing his once again bare washboard stomach muscles. "Oh?" "Just what exactly were you thinking of when you stepped out in your birthday suit with your gun and that…ah…hugely rigid member pointing out straighter then your gun barrel?" Sasha broke into an almost hysterical laughter when she saw the intense blush coming to McGarrett’s face. "Ah, I wasn’t sure if the cold wall had taken care of that ‘little’ problem." "From my view point, I wouldn’t call it a ‘little’ problem," Sasha told him just before McGarrett finally stopped her by giving her another deep and passionate kiss. Sasha relented, allowing her body to respond as she strove to see if she could match the previous day’s reaction just for herself. PAU
