Danny's Double Dating By Terri Whitman © 10-20-00Sally’s restaurant was full as usual. Being a popular place for the locals as well as the tourist, every night the place was packed. It was no different that night. Sally usually had a local band for the entertainment. This week she had hired a band from the mainland. They were just starting out and Sally remembered what it was like to be just starting out. She like to give new bands a helping hand whenever she could. Sitting in the back of the restaurant, Sally listened to the music along with her friend, Steve McGarrett. McGarrett came to Sally’s every so often. As close friends, they enjoyed each others company without making demands upon each other beyond that friendship. Sally had asked assistance of McGarrett only a few times when it involved helping out a struggling youth. This was the case this time with this band. On one of Sally’s very infrequent trips to the mainland, she had happened to hear this particular band play. She thought they would have a better chance of acceptance here in Hawaii, if she could only get them over here. Having talked with McGarrett before and knowing that he also enjoyed helping out the youth of the day, Sally had asked McGarrett to share in the expense of bringing this band to Hawaii. McGarrett had agreed and between the two of them they had arranged for the band to play at Sally’s. The band was an immediate hit. The locals and the tourist packed the place every night. Little did they know that this band would start a series of problems for one of their friends. ***** Paul Hampton was the leader of the Hampton Jazz band. He was from Southern California, where he and two of his high school friends had started playing as a trio locally and for their high school. Paul was the oldest of the trio. He stood just shy of six feet, had blond hair and deep blue eyes. He kept fit by surfing and playing handball. His youngest brother, Justin, was shorter at five feet nine inches. His hair was a darker blond and he had aqua marine blue eyes that turned colors depending on his moods. Like his brother, Justin loved to surf. The third member of the band was a close friend and neighbor of theirs, Cardall Wilson. Cardall was the oldest of the three and the shorter of them. Cardall had a compact body, which made him seem even shorter then his five foot eight frame would have you believe. His light brown, almost blond, hair was very curly. He and his brother, Daniel, were built very similar, but Daniel’s eyes were blue and his were brown. Daniel Wilson was the band’s helper. When the band needed something done or set up, it was his job to do it. Daniel was the oldest of the four men. At thirty-five, Daniel had been on his own for quite some time. Daniel was very popular with the girls also. He had a boyish look all the time that made people think he was much younger then he was. Since he never could hold onto a job for very long, Cardall had talked Paul into hiring Daniel to help them out on this trip. At one of the school concerts the band had been observed by Allan Sakaoka, a musical agent who specialized in jazz bands. Allan saw talent when he saw them. Having approached the trio after the concert, Allen convinced them to allow him to become their agent. Jazz was a growing musical interest on the mainland but not extremely popular during the rock and roll teens of the day. Gigs were hard to come by at the time, but Allan was convinced that it was just a matter of time and placement before this band would take off in the hit listings. This opportunity was soon at hand. ***** A friend of Sally’s had called her up one month inviting her to come and stay for awhile. Not having had a vacation in a while and with the offer of free lodging and time to visit with a dear friend, Sally was on her way to Los Angels. Sally’s friend, Jerri Boaze, picked her up at the airport. The two women talked about their childhood on the Islands and how much the Islands had changed since Jerri had left. Jerri’s son was now in high school. He was one of the organizers for the school’s concert. Naturally, Jerri and Sally went to the concert. This was when she first heard Paul’s band play. Impressed with what Sally heard, she inquired as to the band’s availability. Jerri’s son was to relay the request to Paul. The next day Paul and Allan came over to Jerri’s and met with Sally. "I hear you liked our band," Paul asked. He had heard of Sally’s singing ability before and was excited that she had shown interest in them. "Yes. I use to sing jazz in my youth myself," Sally told him smiling. "Sally and I use to sing at school events ourselves. Of course that was in Hawaii way back when," interjected Jerri, making it sound like it was eons ago in time. "It wasn’t all that far back," corrected Sally. "I was fortunate enough to have been heard by a talent agent working for the USO shows when Bob Hope was giving his tours around the world. He arranged it so I could perform for the troops in Hawaii." Sally thought back to those days after Pearl Harbor. How different the world changed during those preceding years. The accepted music back then was a mixture of big bands and light jazz. Jazz was just starting out on the mainland. Mostly heard in the southern states, it found itself a home in Hawaii with the slack string music mixed with Hawaiian ballads. "It’s been hard to find places willing to have a jazz band here in Los Angeles. Not to many places have heard good jazz music, so they’re leery of giving the kids a chance to show what they can do," Allan told them. "Well, I liked what I heard. Give me a chance and I’d like to see if I could help your band out somehow," Sally told them. "Are you playing again somewhere? I’d like to hear more of your music." "No, unfortunately I’ve been unable to set up another gig for them," Allan responded. "Well, like I said, I liked what I hear. If you ever get to Hawaii look me up, I’ll be glad to have you play at my restaurant." "Hawaii! Wow! I’d love to go there. I’ve heard they really like jazz there," Paul said all excited and smiles. "Unfortunately, it’s too expensive for them. The one thing that Paul’s parents made firm with me is that any of the gigs must be something where, other then for gas in their cars, didn’t cost the family any money," Allan stated. The reminder almost crushed the enthusiasm of Paul's. The disappointment was shown clearly on his face. "If only we could get a sponsor or something. We just missed out on winning a trip to Washington D.C. a while back when we came in second in a battle of the bands contest." "That would have been a good trip for you. Well, like I said, if you ever get over to Hawaii, give me a call. I’ll be glad to have you play there," Sally offered once again. Walking them out to their car, they said their good byes. Allan made sure Sally had his business card before they left. Sally and Jerri watched them as they left before returned to the house. Sally stayed a week with Jerri and her family before returning to Hawaii. ***** McGarrett arrived at the airport with time to spare to pick up Sally. She had asked him earlier to do this. Sally hadn’t gone into details, but she had told him she needed to talk to him as soon as possible. She was going to ask a favor of him, only saying it was somewhat important to her. Not really liking to fly very much, Sally had slept most of the way over during the five-hour flight. Still showing the signs of that sleep she was greeted by the top cop of the Islands. "What, it takes a flight to get you to get some sleep in? Aloha, and welcome home, sleepy head," teased McGarrett as he gave her a kiss on the cheek and placed a plumeria lei around her neck. "Oh you know me Steve. I hate flying. I did it so much when I was younger that I’m just glad to keep my feet on the ground now. But really, I did seem to need that nap," Sally said with an unstifled yawn. "Thanks for picking me up Steve." Taking her carry on bag from her, they headed over to the carousel to pick up the rest of her luggage. "No problem pretty girl. Did you have a good vacation with Jerri and her family?" "We had a blast Steve. They have a beautiful home just outside of Los Angels. They don’t get all that smog where they live. You should see Mike. My god how’s he’s grown. He’s almost as tall as you are Steve. He’s a good kid too," Sally told him, thinking how much like Steve the boy was. He had that very determined jaw and eyes. "Sorry to hear about Mike’s death though. That’s been a while back wasn’t it? Did they ever find out who killed him or why?" McGarrett asked. Jerri’s husband had been in the service with McGarrett, serving under Steve during Korea. They had kept touch afterwards and McGarrett had been named as Godfather to their son, Michael Steven. McGarrett remembered how Jerri had planned on naming the boy first Steven Michael but he had convinced her to put Mike’s name first and that he would be honored if his name was used as the middle name. "No, nothing yet. The detectives there are very closed lipped about it. Jerri’s asked several times but can’t seem to get a straight answer out of them. You know she was pregnant when Mike was killed?" "What does that make, her fourth child?" They had reached the carousel and were waiting for the baggage to be unloaded. The other passengers were gathering to pick up their luggage also. McGarrett led the way to a spot along the carousel that was close enough to watch for the luggage, yet not to be so crowded by the others. Laughing lightly Sally corrected him, "No, this is her fifth one remember? She's got three boys now and two girls. Jerri told me to say Hi to you and she would like for you to send a current picture of yourself to her so she can update her photo album." "Ah, she wants a current mug shot then. I think I can get her one. I’ll send it off this week with a request of my own for a family photo," McGarrett said. "There they are Steve. The two blue ones there with the yellow ribbon on them," Sally said pointing to the baggage. McGarrett reached over and grabbed both suitcases. They walk away from the carrousel and stopped for a moment. Setting down the suitcases, he fingered the ribbons for a moment, then looked at Sally questioningly. "Yes, those are the same ribbons you gave me a while back. I keep them for good luck and thought they’d make an easy way to spot my luggage." McGarrett smiled, he had given them as part of a wrapping on a gift to Sally when Sally had recovered from operation last year. McGarrett had been there for her then the same way she was usually there whenever he had become injured enough to require a long hospital stay. Picking up the suitcases again, they walked to the car. McGarrett placed the luggage into the trunk and then walked over to the passenger's side and opened the door for Sally. After Sally got in, he closed the door and walked around the car to get in himself. "Thanks again Steve for picking me up." "No problem Sally. You're probably wanting to get back to your place to rest up some. I'll pick you up later for some dinner. Feel up to some Chinese food?" "That would be good Steve. I am tired and want some time to unwind. I also need to check in at the restaurant before tonight. I've got an idea and I need to check my books to see if I can swing it." Looking over inquisitively at Sally, McGarrett asked, "Got an idea for the restaurant? Going to do some improvements to the building?" "Well, yes and no. Not an improvement to the building but a drawing card to bring in more customers and maybe helping someone out. That's what I wanted to talk to you about too, but I've got to check on some things before I feel up to talking to you about it." "Ah! But how do I fit in this idea?" McGarrett asked her. His instincts told him she was up to something but he couldn't put a finger on it. "I'm not sure yet Steve. Like I said, I need to check some other things out first. But I promise you, I'll tell you tonight at dinner. OK Steve?" Sally said looking at McGarrett's set face. "Don't question me right now like the detective you are, but give me a chance to do my own homework and then I promise you I'll sing up a storm for you." Looking at Sally for a moment, he wondered what was on her mind. "OK, Sally. Until dinner then and I'll hold you to your promise of a song." Arriving at Sally's apartment, McGarrett parked the car. Getting the suitcases out of the trunk, McGarrett carried them up to her place. Opening the door, Sally invited McGarrett in for a moment. "Not now lov. I'll be back be back though about 6:30 to pick you up. I'll reserve a table at Lee's for us." McGarrett told her. "Until then Steve." "Aloha, lov," McGarrett said as he turned and left. ***** "You don't think that Marty Molua is involved with this then Ben?" Danny Williams asked. He was looking at a file of a new case that Five-0 had been asked to take over by the Governor. "I'd don't think so Danny. The evidence just doesn't read that way. Besides, his family has gone through enough with lose of two sons already," Ben Kokua said shaking his head. "It just about killed Patty the first time." "She was hospitalized for a while, wasn't she?" Danny asked. "Yeah. She had a nervous breakdown. She's been in the hospital since it happened." Sitting up suddenly in his chair, Danny looked over the file much more carefully. A surprised look came onto his face. "Look here Ben, isn't this about the time we got that tip on Sammy Wilua?" Danny said handing the file to Ben to look at. Taking the file to look at what Danny had pointed out, Ben's eyebrows raised. "Why wasn't this followed up the first time?" A smile replaced the look of surprise, "Yeah, why?" Danny questioned. "Steve's going to love this. He's been trying to put Sammy away for sometime. Now here it is; the possible witness to the Tom Lee killing." Both men were looking over the file, taking the information apart bit by bit, when McGarrett walked into the office. Hearing the outer door of the office close, both men looked up together. "Steve!" they both said at the same time, walking towards McGarrett. Danny handed the file to he boss when they met in the middle of the room. Having stopped in his walk to his office, McGarrett took the file offered. "What do you have gentlemen?" McGarrett said as he quickly glanced at the file handed to him. Both men, taking quick looks at each other, had looks of glee on their faces. "How about a possible witness to help put Sammy Wilua away for life?" McGarrett's eyebrows raised at this information. He shot a questioning look at his two detectives. "I was going over the Lee file and noticed that no follow up interview had been done with Mr. Johanason. They took down his name and address but never did an interview with him," Danny filled McGarrett in on the new lead he had found. McGarrett's looked over the file again and smiled. "Good work Danno. Have Duke bring Mr. Johanason in for his statement." Turning to Jenny, McGarrett instructed her to call the District Attorney to see if he could meet with them when Mr. Johanason was present. McGarrett led the way into his office with Danny and Ben right behind him. Setting the file down on his desk for the moment, McGarrett turned and opened the French doors to the lanai. The cool, fragrant smells of the morning drifted in with the light breeze. McGarrett lingered at the doors taking in the beauty of another Hawaiian morning. The breeze that morning was coming off of the mountains, a Maka breeze, which held the promise of some rain. Turning back to his desk and the newly found lead, McGarrett looked over the file again. "How come this lead wasn’t followed up on gentlemen?" "We don’t know Steve. Looks like someone dropped the ball with this one," Ben offered. "At least we caught it now. And since we’ve been unable to actually bring charges against Sammy yet, this doesn’t throw the case out. If the DA can get anything worth while from Johanason, then we can put him away for a long time Steve," Danny stated with a smile. "Yeah," McGarrett said as he picked the file back up. Flipping some pages, McGarrett scanned the information on the case again. When he got to one of the pages, he halted and reread the page more carefully. Flipping back to another page, he again read the report there. "Do we know who the investigate officer was? These reports don't mention a name of the officer," McGarrett said as he handed the file back to Danny. Looking over the two pages McGarrett had mention; Danny noticed where the name should have been. Handing the file to Ben, Danny looked at McGarrett with questioning eyes. "Someone really blew this file. Maybe it's just an oversight." Ben was looking over all the pages again when he came to the last form. "Here it is Steve. Officer Thomas Cordin was the investigative officer first on the scene." Taking the file back, McGarrett read the form at the back of the file. "Ben, get hold of Officer Cordin. I'd like to hear from him as to why the other forms weren't signed and why he didn't interview Mr. Johanason." ***** Duke Lukela pulled up to the Johanason's residence within twenty minutes of receiving McGarrett's instructions. The Johanason's home looked well cared for. Walking up to the front door, Duke could hear a commotion from within. After waiting a minute or two after knocking hard on the door, Duke heard the commotion from within getting louder. When a woman's voice was heard screaming, Duke pulled out his service gun and kicked in the door. Two men were fighting. A large oriental man had the other man in a headlock and was choking him when Duke came into the room. "Stop them, please, stop them!" the woman cried when she saw Duke. Duke ran over to the two fighting men. Grabbing the little finger of the left hand of the oriental man, Duke pulled it backward with some force. The pain caused the man to break his headlock allowing the other man to slip to the floor coughing and gasping for breath. The woman ran over to the coughing man to aid him. "Ow!" yelled the oriental man for Duke had forced his arm behind his back now. After putting his service gun back into his holster, Duke put the handcuffs on the oriental man. "Sit down on the floor, cross your legs and be quiet," Duke told his prisoner as he forced the man to the floor. Walking over to the other man, Duke helped the women get him onto the couch. "Mr. Johanason, Paul Johanason?" Duke asked. "Yeah," coughed the man as he rubbed his throat area. "This is Ema, my wife," he said nodding his head towards the woman. "Thanks for helping me." "Do you know who this guy is?" Duke asked pointing with his left thumb towards the man sitting on the floor. "No, I've never met him before. He was in the house when Ema and I came home just now. He jumped my from behind and started choking me." "I didn't know what to do. He was choking Paul and all," said the distraught Ema. "It OK Ema, I'm fine now. Thanks again, Mr.…?" Duke reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out his badge, "Duke Lukela. I'm with Hawaii Five-0. I've been sent here to ask you to come back to headquarters with me, Mr. Johanason." "It's about that killing last month, isn't it?" Mrs. Johanason asked. "I can't say right now, Mrs. Johanason. I've only been told to come and ask Mr. Johanason to come with me." "What about this guy? Are you going to just let him go?" Duke turned to the man sitting on the floor for a moment. "Unless you're not wanting to press charges against him, he'll be booked for assault." Rubbing his throat a bit more, "Yes, I'll press the charges against him and I'll go with you Mr. Lukela." "I'll need to use your phone for a minute to get a unit to come and pick this guy up," Duke informed the couple. "Sure, sure. Ema, show Mr. Lukela where the phone is." After the HPD unit took the oriental man away, Duke escorted both Johanason's to his car. "Control this is Lukela, get me McGarrett." ***** "Steve, Duke is here with the Johanason's," Jenny informed her boss on the intercom. "OK, Jenny. Show them in please," McGarrett told her. Danny walked over to the door to open it for them. He stood aside while the three people walked into the office and then closed the door behind them. McGarrett walked up to them and shook Mr. Johanason's hand. He then showed them to the white chairs in front of his desk. Once they were seated, McGarrett walked back to his chair behind his desk and sat down. "For some reason Mr. Johanason, one of our investigator's failed to contact you in regards to the killing that happened three days ago. I'd like for you to tell me what you saw." "Mr. McGarrett, I didn't come forward earlier because I had been told that someone would be contacting me on this. In fact, Ema and I had just decided to come down here today because we hadn't heard from anyone," Mr. Johanason explained. "We were just coming home to prepare to come down here when I was attacked. Thankfully Mr. Lukela came when he did." "Yes, he briefed me as to what had happened. This is also the reason that I'll need to place you under protective custody Mr. Johanason, both you and your wife," McGarrett told him. Uncertainty showed clearly on both of the Johanason's faces. McGarrett saw they look at each other with fear. "It's really the only way I can guarantee you and your wife's safety right now. If your both not put under protective custody, then this type of thing will happen again and Mr. Lukela might not be there to help." McGarrett gave the Johanason's another moment to consider the extreme danger that they would be in without the protection. "How long would we need to be under police protection?" Mrs. Johanason asked. Fear was very evident in her eyes. "That sort of depends on just how much you saw Mr. Johanason. If you are an actual witness and saw whom it was that killed Mr. Lee, then we’d have enough evidence to arrest the killer. Did you see who killed Mr. Lee?" McGarrett asked him. Danny had been standing to the side of McGarrett’s desk during this time. "Yes, Mr. McGarrett. I not only saw it but he tried to kill me too. I was able to get away and hide." Both McGarrett and Danny’s eyes widen at this information. Looking momentarily at each other Danny thought to himself ‘Someone has really slipped up Steve. He should have been taken into protective custody immediately.’ "Mr. Johanason, do you know the name of the killer?" Danny asked hoping to hear the name of Sammy Wilua. "No, not his name, but I would know him if I saw him again," Mr. Johanason stated. Picking up the file on his desk, McGarrett leafed through it for a moment pulling out some mug shots. Putting the file back down on his desk, McGarrett got up from his chair and walked to the front of his desk where he handed the mug shots to Mr. Johanason. "Were any of these men the killer you saw?" Mr. Johanason looked at them for a minute. When he came to the third one he stopped. Looking back up at McGarrett, he handed the mug shots back as he said, "This is the guy I saw shoot and kill Mr. Lee, Mr. McGarrett." Danny looked over at the mug shot and smiled. "We’ve got him Steve. We’ve got the break we’ve been looking for." Looking back at Mr. Johanason, Danny asked him, "You’re sure this is the guy?" Nodding his head, "Yes. That’s the man I saw. I’ll swear that in court if I have to." McGarrett smiled for a moment as he reached over to the phone intercom, "Jenny, can you see if the District Attorney can come to my office for a moment. Tell him be have a break in the Lee killing." "Well do boss," came the reply. ***** Arrangements were made for the safe house for the Johanason’s after the statement was taken. Armed with the needed proof, an arrest warrant was taken out for the arrest of Sammy Wilua. An APB was given to all HPD. "Danno, I want you to go with the Johanason’s. Ben will relieve you and then Duke will take up from there. I also want four shifts of three HPD officers also helping out on this. Mr. Johanason, is there anything back at your home that you must have during this time?" "I’ve got some medicines I have to take, Mr. McGarrett," Mrs. Johanason said. "OK, I’ll need to arrange to take you back there to pick those items up and anything else you might need. You understand that you’re life will be in danger if you do not have this protection," McGarrett informed them. "Yes sir, we understand and want to co-operate with you," Mr. Johanason said in a concerned voice. "How long will we be detained like this Mr. McGarrett?" Mrs. Johanason asked. Worry and stress were showing now. She was wondering how long their lives would be interrupted and how soon it would get back to normal. "That will depend on how fast we can find and arrest Mr. Wilua. But this protection won’t end at his capture, no, you’ll be needing this protection until after the trial and he has been sent to prison," Danny informed them. ***** Once the Johanason’s were safely secured with Danny at the safe house, McGarrett drove over to Sally’s. McGarrett noticed that the parking lot was already full as he parked his Mercury and walked into the restaurant. Freddie, Sally’s bar man saw McGarrett come in and waved to McGarrett. McGarrett had to weave in and out of customers to get to the bar. "How’s things going Freddie? Looks like another full house." "Yah, we are really starting to pack them in good. This is light right now, you should see it on Friday and Saturday nights," Freddie told the top cop. Freddie had been with Sally’s going on three years now. McGarrett had told Sally about Freddie’s past and how he needed some help to restart his life again. "Sally said you would be coming about now. She’s in her office. You want me to call her to tell her you’re here?" "No, I know the way." McGarrett walked towards the back of the restaurant and through the door of the kitchen. The cooks in the back watched him walk past to Sally’s office door. There he knocked on the closed door. "Come in," came the voice from within. McGarrett opened the door to find Sally on the phone. Smiling, Sally waved McGarrett in and held up a finger to indicate she’d be free in a minute. "OK, Paula, so the money would be available when?" Sally asked Paula on the phone. Listening for a moment, "Great. I’ll stop by and sign the papers tomorrow then. You’re a doll for helping out like this. I’ve got company now, so I’ll talk with you tomorrow then." Sally listened to the other person on the other end for a moment more before saying aloha to them. Hanging up the phone, Sally turned to McGarrett. A big smile was on her face. "OK, pretty lady, what’s up that you wanted to talk to me about?" McGarrett asked as he sat on the corner of Sally’s desk. "Oh, Steve, I’ve got so much to tell you. Can we talk over the promised dinner?" Sally reminded him. "Sure. Let’s go. I’ve reserved my normal table at Uncle Lee’s for us," McGarrett said as he guided Sally out of her office, closing the door behind them. Walking up to the bar Sally told Freddie she could be contacted at Mr. Lee’s Chinese Food restaurant if anything should come up that couldn’t wait. Uncle Lee was a cousin to the late Chin Ho Kelley. His restaurant had for many years provided many a late night dinner to the team of Five-0. When McGarrett and Sally walked into the restaurant Mr. Lee greeted them. They sat in towards the back of the restaurant where Mr. Lee took their orders and then disappeared. It was apparent to him that this was a meeting so he knew they wanted their privacy. "Oh Steve, I’ve got a big favor to ask of you. You know I went to visit Jerri and her family. Well while I was there we went to a school Jazz concert that Mike had helped put on. I got to hear a really nice band there," Sally told him thinking back to the concert and the memories of the past it brought up for her. "Steve, I don’t know how much you know about the jazz music business, but on the mainland the music hasn’t really be accepted all that much yet. Here in Hawaii, it’s the going item." "And you want to bring them here, right?" McGarrett interjected. "Yes, Steve. I’d like to bring them over and help them out. I’d be willing to pay for their stay while their here. I’ve got those extra rooms above the restaurant you know, so I could put them up there. I’d provide them with meals and I’d pay them a small fee of some type. I think if I could get them here the tourist would love them and when they went back home they’d be talked about the band and a break might open up for them there then." "Where do I fit in this plan?" McGarrett asked her. "I’ve got enough to swing just what I’ve told you. What I can’t afford is the plane tickets. That’s where I need your help. I know you like to help out young people when you can Steve. This band is good. They just need some help to get stated." Mr. Lee had brought their dinner for them. Making sure there was no other things needed he left the two to continue their talk. "How much are you talking about?" "There is Paul Hampton, who is the band leader, his brother Justin and their friend Cardall Wilson. I think there is another person who also helps out but I don’t know their name. Then also there are their parents, so about eight to ten people all together. I can get more information for you on that part," Sally told him. "Plus their luggage and instruments. You figure the cost on my part at what Sally?" McGarrett asked her with more interest now. "I figure about twenty-five hundred all total. I’d be willing to pay you back too Steve if that’s what’s worrying you," Sally pleaded with him. "Tell you what, you get me an exact figure on the costs and I’ll let you know." "So you’re interested in helping these kids out then?" Sally asked hopefully. "I think I might be able to help you out," smiled McGarrett as he put his hand on top of Sally's. "Don't worry about paying me back. Consider it my donation to help them out." Sally smiled as her voice softened, "I just had a feeling you'd want to help them out. You won't regret it either Steve." ***** Danny and the Johanason's were making the best out of what the safe house had to offer them. One of the officers assigned to help Five-0 was Sandy Wells. She was in the first group of the rotating HPD officers assigned to protect the Johanason's. "It's good to be working again with you Danny," Sandy said as she brought out a tray of juice glasses and a pitcher filled with the fruit beverage and ice. The Johanason’s both walked into the living room as Sandy sat the tray down; Sandy grabbed one of the glasses and poured herself a glass. "Mr. and Mrs. Johanason, would you like a glass of juice?" "No thank you Officer Wells. We're fine," they both said. They had just finished unpacking their suitcases and now wanted to relax as best they could. Mr. Johanason had his arm around his wife’s shoulder as if to protect her. He was sorry that his wife had to be dragged into this problem, but was thankful that McGarrett had decided to protect her also. "Danny?" "Sure Sandy, thank you." Sandy poured the juice into another glass and handed it to Danny. Sandy then sat down in on of the cushioned chairs in the living room. "How long do you think it will be before Sammy is caught?" Looking at the Johanason's for a moment, Danny could see that they were thinking the same question. "I don't know Sandy. Steve said they had a good lead on where they think he's hold up, but you know how leads can be. But this needed protection will continue until not only is Sammy caught but convicted and sent to prison. "So this could be awhile then Mr. Williams?" Mrs. Johanason asked. Their confinement to the safe house hadn't even been three hours yet and Danny could see that she was upset at how their lives had been interrupted already. "It could be Mrs. Johanason. What we're mostly concern with is that while Mr. Wilua is free, the greatest danger will come from the people he has control over. They are the ones he would order to try kill you both," Danny told her as gently as he could. "The situation you are in is very serious and Five-0 was going to do it's best at protecting the only witness to the brutal killing of Tom Lee." Ema looked at her husband with worried eyes. Paul looked at his wife for a moment and then gave her another squeeze of his arm. "We’ll be okay honey. I’m sure Mr. McGarrett has placed us with the best protection he can. Just think of this as an early vacation of sorts, but one in which we don’t go anywhere. We’ll be fine." Ema tried to put on a brave front for her husband, but Danny could see that she was clearly worried and very scared. "I’ll be okay Paul. I just hope this doesn’t take too long." "Neither do we, Mrs. Johanason," Sandy replied. "Don’t worry, Steve’s got all of HPD helping track down Sammy Wilua. Who knows, maybe by tonight he’ll have been caught," Danny said trying to lighten the tenseness in the room. ***** Sally was at the airport to meet the plane. McGarrett had given her enough money to get all of the Hampton’s and Wilson’s families over to Hawaii. Seeing the plane land Sally walked over to the gangway. She had brought some plumeria leis and a sign with her with the families’ last names written on it for she wasn’t sure if they would remember what she looked like and she was hoping she could remember what they looked like also. The passengers were starting to coming out of the gangway now. Sally held up the sign hoping she would spot them before long. A group of nine people were all talking and excited had just come through when Sally recognized Paul, Justin and Cardall. Waving to them, Sally made her way through the crowd to reach them. "You made it, great," she said to the group. She hung a lei around the necks of each member and gave them a kiss on their cheeks. "Aloha and welcome to Hawaii." "Hi Sally. You remember my brother Justin and my parents?" Paul said excitedly while looking all over the airport. "Sure, aloha." "This is my sister Katie and Cardall’s brother Daniel and their parents, Tammy and Carl Wilson," Paul said making the introductions. "Thank you for inviting the boys to play at your restaurant, Miss Koolu…" Mr. Hampton said as he struggled to try to try to pronounce their host’s last name. "Kooluluiania, but just call me Sally. Let’s go get your luggage and get you settled at my place." Sally was too busy to really notice what everyone looked like but there was something very familiar with one of the Wilson members, she just couldn’t put her finger on it right then. Sally had hired two vans to take everyone and their luggage back to her place. Once there they unloaded the luggage and followed Sally up the stairs to the two apartments Sally had prepared for them. "My place is just down the hall here from you. If you need anything let me know. I have a young gal that will be coming to take care of your places once a day, so you don’t have to worry about making your beds or anything. I’ve left you a list of phone numbers you’ll need. You can either call the kitchen up and have meals brought up or go down to the restaurant for them. You’ll also have use of the two vans, here are the keys to them." "You’re providing so much," Mrs. Wilson said, awed by the offers. Smiling Sally wanted to assure her that it was no bother for her. "I just want to help the boys out and besides, if their half as good as I think they’ll be, I’ll be paid back on my investment ten fold from the packed houses each night. I don’t see this as an expense but as an investment in both them and my own place. Besides, I have a friend who is helping out too. You’ll get to meet him later." "When did you want the boys to start playing for you?" Mr. Hampton asked. "I thought maybe in two days, that way you’ll all have a chance to rest up from the trip and get comfortable. You’ll also want to set up your equipment and maybe get some practice in before the first night," Sally told him. She could remember how it had been when she was on tour; the rushing and running which was required to be done before everything was ready for each performance. She was hoping to make it a little easier on the boys if she could by giving them the needed time to get ready. ***** Sally’s place was packed so much that there was a waiting line going outside of customers wanting to get in. The band had only been playing at her place for one week. Their popularity had spread like wild fire on the Island. Sally had repeatedly asked McGarrett to come and hear the band but he was too busy with a current case to fine the time to drop in. She was still getting a feeling too that she had met the oldest Wilson boy before, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. She knew that the local girls had also been attracted to him for he always could be found with someone as they went sight seeing and to the beach. ***** Pamela Kim had seen Danny at Sally’s on the second night the band was in town. Walking over to his table Pamela sat herself down in the booth across the table from him. "I thought you were going to call me last night. But I never received a call. What happened, I thought we had a thing going, or am I not good enough for you now?" Surprise showed up on his face as this beautiful woman sat down across from him. He didn’t know who she was but he decided to play along and see what would transpire. "Sorry, I got tied up. I didn’t have anyway to call you." "Well, at least you could do is buy me dinner," Pamela said. "Sure. Then maybe we could go to the beach for an evening walk." Smiling to herself, she thought of what she’d like to do with Danny Williams on a secluded beach. ***** McGarrett was getting upset. It had been a week now and Five-0 was no closer to arresting Sammy then they had been from the start. There hadn’t been any attempt so far on the Johanason’s lives, but he wasn’t going to take any chances. The team had taken turns being part of the security for their safety. McGarrett was briefing Ben and Duke on the case when his phone rang, "McGarrett." He listened for a bit, then his eyes shot a look at his men as he received information from HPD that they had Sammy trapped in a warehouse at Pearl City. "Great, we’ll be right there," he said as he slammed down the phone. "Come on, HPD has Sammy trapped. Now we can get this case wrapped up," he said as he grabbed his holster and coat racing for the door. Ben and Duke were hard after their boss’s heals trying to keep up with his long strides as he raced out of the Palace. Tires squealed as the two black cars pulled up at the warehouse. Chief Dann was there to meet McGarrett. "Hi Steve. I thought you’d like to be here. He’s still in there along with five or six others in his group." "Glad you called, Chief. Now we can get this case over with." "I’ve got four units in the back of the warehouse and three out here in front. He’s not going anywhere," Chief Dann told the head of Five-0. "You got a bull horn?" McGarrett asked. Handing him the one from his squad car, McGarrett called out to the men in the warehouse. "Sammy Wilua, this is Steve McGarrett with Five-0, give yourself up. You have no way of escape, you’re completely surrounded." There was no movement within the warehouse. All of a sudden a hale of bullets came from one of the windows on the second floor of the building. Ducking behind the squad cars, the officers returned fire. The radio in Chief Dann’s car squawked. Reaching in the car, Chief Dann listened to the officer on the other side of the warehouse. "Some men tried to come out this way. We were able to arrest them without too much trouble. They didn’t have any fight in them when they saw they were facing our guns." "Steve, they’ve got some of Sammy’s men," the Chief yelled. Running low, using the other squad cars as cover, Steve, Duke and Ben came over to Chief Dann’s car. McGarrett signaled he wanted to talk to the officer at the other end. The Chief handed McGarrett the mike. "How many were you able to get and do you know how many are left inside?" For a moment there was no response. McGarrett was about to repeat his questions when the radio squawked again. "They didn’t want to tell us at first. When I told them they would have to face you for questioning they decided to tell us. Sammy still has three men inside with him. They’re on the second floor. We haven’t gone into the warehouse yet. We’re waiting for your instructions." "Okay, hold on," McGarrett told the officer. "Ben, take a radio with you and go around to the back and go in with them. Take five officers with you. Once you’re inside let me know." "Sure thing Steve," Ben said as he went back to get a portable radio. It would take him about ten minutes to work his way to the back of the warehouse. Once there, he took the five HPD officers into the warehouse. So far so good, they hadn’t been heard or noticed by the men inside. "Steve, we’re inside," Ben radioed back. "Good, good. Try to see where you can get up to the second floor. I’ll need you to create a diversion inside so we can get closer and get inside ourselves." "Well do. Give us about five minutes. I’ll radio you when we’re in position," Ben told his boss. Less then five minutes later, McGarrett heard shooting within the warehouse. Not waiting for Ben’s call McGarrett, Duke and three officers raced for the front door of the warehouse. Quickly McGarrett tried the doorknob. Locked! McGarrett put the end of his gun against the doorknobs housing and shot into it. The lock now blasted away, McGarrett kicked in the door and rushed in going low and to the left as Duke and the other officers filed in going to the right. The inside of the warehouse was dark. It took them a few moments to get their eyes adjusted. Keeping close to the boxes, they worked their way towards the center of the warehouse. Taking a moment, McGarrett radioed Ben. "Ben, we’re inside." The shooting had intensified before McGarrett got a response. "We’re upstairs Steve. There’s only the one stair case so be careful when you come up." Running for the stairs, McGarrett led his men upstairs to join Ben’s group. Using hand signals, Ben indicated where Sammy and his men were held up. Nodding to Ben he understood, McGarrett worked over to the right of Ben’s group. When everyone was positioned McGarrett called out, "Sammy, Sammy Wilua! This is McGarrett. This is your last chance. Give yourself up. I’ll guarantee you’re safety if you do it now." "No way McGarrett. It won’t be that easy." More bullets flew from the office area on the second floor. The officers returning fire. McGarrett had now worked his way to the back of the office area. There he found another door to the offices inside. Holding his breath, McGarrett tried the door. It was unlocked. Carefully and quietly he opened the door. Slipping inside McGarrett, Duke and an HPD officer worked their way towards the sounds. They now had Sammy and his remaining men between them. Careful of the bullets from the others coming towards Sammy, McGarrett eased himself closer. When he saw that the other two were ready, McGarrett yelled out, "Drop it Sammy!" Surprised by the rear assault, Sammy turned quickly to try to shoot those behind him. McGarrett could feel the ozone burn near his head as a bullet sailed past his head. From a squatting position, McGarrett shot only once. The bullet hitting Sammy square in the chest. He was dead before he hit the ground. Sammy’s face was frozen with the surprise of the counter attack. McGarrett stood up with his gun trained on the remaining men. McGarrett's facial expression was hard and very serious. This expression told the remaining men that they would face the same faith that their leader had if they didn't surrender. Quickly dropping their weapons, the three men remaining raised their hands surrendering when they saw their leader go down. All the fight was gone when they saw they were out numbered. Ben, Duke and the HPD officers quickly took them into custody. Once they were searched for hidden weapons, the remaining men where handcuffed and escorted to the waiting squad cars. "Looks like your case is closed now Steve," Chief Dann mentioned. "We have his men here and those that are left won't be much to round up." "Yes, and we can release the Johanason's from the safe house. I don't think they will be in any further danger now," McGarrett replied as he looked over the office. "Duke, have Che get over here and go through this place. I'm going to the safe house." ***** Finally getting a day off, Danny had called Pamela to see if he could reset the date that he had to break one week ago. "Pamela. Hi, how are you?" "How dare you call me. After our last date, I thought I had made it clear to you I didn't want to ever see you again," Pamela screamed at him over the phone line. Taken back for a moment, Danny was trying hard to figure out what she was talking about. "I'm sorry…" Dan started to say only to be interrupted by Pamela once again screaming over the phone. "You had better be sorry and hope that I don't bring charges against you. You…you…you cad. I never want to see you again," she screamed into the phone just before she slammed it down. Looking at the receiver, Danny couldn't believe what he was hearing. Shaking his head, Danny got out his little booklet of phone numbers and looked through it for a bit. Seeing another name, he called it. "Shelly, hi. This is Danny Williams," he said when the phone was answered. "You fiend! Drop dead!" screamed the voice before the line went dead. Totally taken off guard, Danny put the phone back on the hook and sat down. 'What is going on?' he thought to himself. A few minutes later his phone rang. "Hello" "Danny, hi. This is Susie Kelly." "Hi Susie. What's up?" Danny asked the oldest daughter of his departed friend. "Danny, just what have you been up to? I've just had a call from Pamela and Shelly. They told me you called them. I thought you had more class then to call them after what you've done last week," Susie asked him accusingly. "Whoa, wait a minute Susie. I don't know what you're talking about. I've been at the safe house all week helping guard the Johanason's. I haven't been anywhere," Danny said defensively. "What do you mean? I saw you at Sally's only last night," Susie told him. "Now I know you're wrong. Steve just released me from watching the Johanason's this morning. I've been over on the North Shore for the last week," Danny told her getting a little hot. He didn't like being accused without knowing what it was that he was suppose to have done. Susie didn't answer back for a moment. "Danny, are you sure? That sure looked like you. Pamela and Shelly were so positive it was you. You should have heard what they said you've done." "Like what am I suppose to have done?" Danny insisted. He was getting upset and yet very curious too. Susie when on to tell him how the two women had gone on a date with this guy and how rough and rude this person was. She had also heard from a few other female friends of Danny's. They had had told her of the same type of run in with this person that they had met up with at Sally's. Here was the common element to this mystery. Before Danny hung up, he assured her that it couldn't have been him. He then called McGarrett asking him to meet him at Sally's. ***** The evening crowd had started to thin down when Danny arrived at Sally's. He decided to wait until McGarrett arrive before going into the restaurant. Since she was a good friend of McGarrett's, he wanted McGarrett here when he went in to investigate this mystery person. As he stood next to his car, Monica, a girl he had dated before, came up to him and with no warning slapped his face. The man she was with gave Danny a dirty look as if to say 'I dare you to do something.' Holding his stinging cheek, Danny offered no resistance as the two people walked away going towards their car. He was still looking towards the departing couple when Rita, his current girlfriend, came up to him. She too slapped his face and asked him how could he have acted so badly. Not waiting for a reply, Rita walked off. When McGarrett arrived, he found his young detective nursing a very red face. A large red area from Rita's slap was threatening to turn into a large bruise. "What happened Danno? Who hit you?" "This," pointing to his reddening cheek, "Is from two women I've dated before." Trying hard to suppress a laugh, McGarrett shook his head, then teasingly said, "Girl trouble, you the most sought after bachelor on the Islands having girl trouble?" "This is serious Steve. There are five women, six, if you count Susie Kelly…" "What, Susie's mad at you too. What you not giving her enough attention either?" McGarrett said now totally unable to suppress the laughter anymore. Danny gave his boss a dirty look for a moment. Then he too started to laugh. "If it was so funny, I'd have to take it seriously." "You're thinking someone is impersonating you don't you?" McGarrett asked him now becoming somewhat more serious. Impersonating an officer could lead to serious problems. "I'm not sure Steve. I don't think they're impersonating me as an officer but they're sure putting a dent in my dating list," Danny told him. Danny stood in the parking lot looking at the crowd still coming to Sally's. "I've sort of figured out that this is the only lead I have so far. All of them have met this person so far here." Looking at the crowd himself, McGarrett stood there with his hands on his hips. "And you thought that if I were with you that I could give you an alibi for where you've been all last week?" McGarrett finished Danny's thoughts. "Yeah and that Sally is a friend of yours and I don't want her thinking I'm trying to cause her any trouble," Danny told him. All Danny knew was that he could probably never get those women back unless he was able to totally clear his name. Putting his hand on his young detective's shoulder, McGarrett hand offered the moral support he knew he needed. Danny wasn't use to being rejected by women. The two of them walked to the restaurant to begin to solve this mystery. McGarrett and Danny walked up to the bar in the back. When Freddie saw them approach, his facial expression became sour. "Hi Freddie, is Sally in her office?" McGarrett asked the bartender. Still giving Danny a sour look, me turned towards McGarrett and told her she was in. "What you bringing that guy back in here for?" he asked the Five-0 boss. "Freddie, what are you talking about? I haven't been here in over two weeks," Danny said. McGarrett hadn't said anything for a bit. He was thinking of what he had been told so far and the reactions of the people when Danny was around. "It seems that Freddie thinks you've been less then gentlemanly, Danno. Just what has Danno done that makes you feel this way?" McGarrett questioned the bartender. Taken a bit back for a moment, Freddie looked at McGarrett before saying any more. "You know I like Mr. Williams, Mr. McGarrett, but the way he's been acting the last few days…I don't know. I don't want to spread gossip around, but he's not been the gentleman that I've always known him to be." "Freddie, like I've said, I haven't been here for two weeks. I've been on assignment guarding a potential witness. Sandy Wells, Moli Koloma and Stan Hanson were with me all during this time." "Then you've got an exact double here on the Islands, Mr. Williams. And their not exactly behaving themselves, if you know what I mean," Freddie told him. Both detectives looked at each other for a moment. About then Sally came out of her office. "I thought I heard your voice Steve." She did a double take when she saw Danny. "Daniel?" "Who's Daniel, Sally?" McGarrett asked her. Sally took a closer look at Danny and then broke into a laugh. "Danny my friend, you've got a twin. Now I know why Daniel was bothering me so much. I didn't realize just how much he looks like you." About that time Mr. and Mrs. Hampton came into the restaurant. Seeing who they thought was Daniel, they came up to him, "So, you've decided to come back. You know you've really upset your parents." A look of concern came over Danny's face. 'Just what has this double of mine been doing? Just how much trouble has he gotten me into?' Freddie, Sally and McGarrett broke into more laughter as they realized how even the parents of the band members mistook Danny for the wayward man who had been brought over to help the band. Not understanding what the laughter was for, Mr. Hampton started to get a bit upset. "This is serious matter young man." Mrs. Hampton, after taking a closer look herself, started laughing too. "What is so funny?" Mr. Hampton said and then he took a closer look at Danny and all of a sudden realized his mistake. "Oh, my god. I'm sorry sir. I thought you were Daniel, the oldest boy of the Wilson's. He was supposed to be helping the band, but as soon as he got here he took off. We've been having problems with him." It was between breaks for the band right now. When the band members came over to Sally, they too thought that Danny was the missing brother. Sally invited McGarrett and Danny now to a dinner to hear the new band that she had brought over. The band was into their third song when Daniel came into the restaurant with another girl hanging onto his arm. McGarrett was the one who saw him enter and motioned to Danny who now saw the man. Daniel was with another of Danny's girlfriends. Danny was going to get up when McGarrett stopped him. "Let him be for a moment. Let's see what he does." Within twenty minutes of arrival the young lady he was with became very upset and reached across the table and slapped her date before running out of the restaurant. That was enough for Danny who got up and walked over to Daniel still sitting at the table. "So you're the one causing me my troubles," Danny said confronting his double. Getting up from the table, Daniel smiled. "Your looks have given me some real fun. Too bad it looks like my fun has come to an end." Hearing the loud voices, McGarrett, Sally, the band parents' came over to the table. "Daniel!" Mrs. Wilson said. She was looking at both men, surprised at how much they looked like each other. "Yeah, mom," Daniel said looking down at the floor, his attitude wasn't so cocky now. "Young man, you have a lot to account for and you owe Mr. Williams here an apology," Mr. Wilson told his wayward son. "I'm sorry Mr. Williams. When they told me I was going to have to come here, I didn't really want to come. I was having a lot of fun in Los Angeles. All my girlfriends are there. They're sort of use to my ways. I was getting board and when I found that I was being confused for some guy that apparently was very popular, I sort of let things ride and it got away from me." Danny could only laugh himself. No real damage had been done. At least now he could explain to those women and maybe he could repair their opinion of him. ***** The band was into its fifth week now on the Island. They had become an even bigger hit then Sally could have hoped for. Danny's damage reputation had been repaired and Daniel had decided to behave himself. Now Danny had a new girlfriend. Having come to Sally's more often; Danny had a chance to get to know the daughter of the Hampton's. Daniel made sure that Danny would have no further problems from him, paying for most of the expenses out of his own pocket. Katie and Danny were becoming a well know couple to the people of Waikiki as they went out to the different entertainment areas. Four weeks later Danny was sad to see the end of the bands stay. Katie and he had grown to care for each other a lot. ***** "United Flight 307 now boarding at gate eleven!" came over the intercom. "Well, that's our flight, Mr. Hampton said to the group. The nine people gathered up their belongings and proceeded to the gangway leading to the plane. Danny, McGarrett and Sally were there to watch them off. Katie and Danny had been sitting aside from the rest while they waited. "Danny, I wish I could stay," Katie said as she sat next to Danny. He had his arm around her as if not wanting to let her go. "Maybe you can come back," Danny suggested. He didn't like the thought of losing another girlfriend, but he consoled himself knowing that this one was leaving without slapping his face, "and when you do maybe we can spend more time together." "You think?" Katie said looking into Danny's clear blue eyes. Before he answered her he took her head in his hands and kissed her hard on the lips. Katie seemed to melt in his hands as the kiss lingered. "United Flight 307 now boarding at gate eleven!" came over the intercom again. "Come one Katie. It's time to leave," her mother told her. Separating, Danny and Katie walked to the gangway. There Danny gave Katie another kiss. "Just remember where you can get some more of those," he told her. Smiling and slightly wilted, Katie told him she would remember. Danny watched her disappear into the gangway, before walking over to McGarrett and Sally at the windows of the airport. Soon, the gangway was pushed back and the tractor rolled the plane back to clear it of the buildings. There the three friends watched as the plane took off. As McGarrett, Sally and Danny left the airport, Sally asked Danny if he hand any other plans for double dating in the future. Feinting that his feelings were hurt, Danny told Sally that he didn't think he'd do that anymore. In fact, he had just increased his list of names of his girlfriends in his book by one. McGarrett broke into a big grin and started to laugh. It could only happen to Danny and only in Hawaii, almost losing most of his girlfriends only to get them back and increase the list by one. ALOHA
