A Valentine's Card for Danny By Terri Whitman © 2-9-00 Dan Williams was uncharacteristically late on this February morning. He thought to himself, I just hope I beat Steve to the office. He wasn't prepared see that Jenny had been the first person in the office this morning. "Morning, Jenny," he said as he greeted the secretary for the Hawaii's top police unit Hawaii Five-0. "You're early this morning." She smiled back to the youngest member of the unit, "Good morning, Danny. I know and you're late, but at least you beat the boss. I've already put your mail on your desk. You've also received a package, which I've put on your desk." "Thanks Jenny." "So Steve's not in yet?" Dan mused as he went into his office. He picked up his mail and glanced quickly over the different letters. One of the letters was in a pink envelope, which Dan didn't pay much attention to it right then. After he sat down, he started to open a few of the letters. He took the time to read some of the information in them. He separated them into piles as he red them so he could go over them more later in the day. "Steve is usually here before the sun is even up," Jenny mentioned as she brought him a cup of coffee. She paused for a moment to watch the young man behind the desk. "I see someone likes colored envelopes," she said as she pointed to the pink envelope still unopened. Dan glanced once more at the mentioned envelop and picked it up. He looked it over a little more closely while he sipped the coffee. "Umm, good. Thanks, it's not as battery acid strong like Steve makes," he told her as he took another sip. "I sometimes wonder if he ever goes home at night." "He did stay late last night again. I finally left about 7:30 or so and he still wasn't ready to leave yet." Jenny often stayed late to be there just in case McGarrett needed something. She also worried about the long hours he put in. Her boss often worked late into the night when he was on a case that was about to be finished. Dan finished looking at his mail. He had opened all but the pink envelope and the package. He wanted to get his reports together for the meeting with McGarrett later that morning. Reports ready and he refilled his coffee cup he sat down and took a look at the package. Hum, only has a Post Office Box number for a return address. He lightly shook the package, Dan thought to himself. Wonder what this is? Wonder if I should have Che make sure it's not a bomb or something. After he set the package down, he picked up the pink envelope. He noted that the pink envelope showed the same Post Office Box number for a return address as the package. Dan picked up his letter opener again. Deftly he slipped the opener into the letter and with a flick of his wrist slit the letter open. He withdrew the card inside, and saw it was a Valentine's card. So distracted by the card, he didn't hear McGarrett walk up to his office. McGarrett spotted the pink frilly card in Dan's hand. "What's this, a Valentine's card from one of your current girl friends?" He was always amazed at how easy it was for Dan to find new girl friends. It seemed like every month or so he would meet someone new. So far, Dan didn't have a serious relationship with anyone in particular. To him it seemed that his young friend enjoyed casual relationships. Dan jumped at the voice speaking to him. His face turned pink, which matched the card he held in his hand. "Could be, but it's not from Amy. The card's not signed, so I don't know who my secret friend is. They've also sent me a package," hen said as he gestured to the package. "So it's Amy this week? You don't think it's from her then?" McGarrett said as he walked over to the desk and picked up the package. He also lightly shook the package. "Do you want Che to x-ray it? Think maybe it's a bomb or something?" he teased. "Very funny, you're just jealous because you didn't receive one," Dan said as he took the package from his friend. He turned the package over a few times before deciding to open it. Carefully, he opened the package. Inside was a Valentine's box of chocolate candy. "Any card with it?" McGarrett asked as he took a look at the box of candy, he saw it was from a very excellent confectioner's store in Honolulu. He wasn't one who usually cared for sweets of any type, but he did know the reputation of this particular store. It was the one he used to buy some of the holiday gifts for different people in his life. "Hey, who sent you the candy Danny?" ask Chin Ho as he walked up to Dan's office. He had just arrived in the office and had seen McGarrett and Jenny as the stood at the door to Dan's office. "Don't know Chin, they didn't sign the card," he said. "He also received a Valentine card from a secret admirer," teased Jenny. "Who got a box of candy?" came from Kono as he joined them at the door. "Danny!" McGarrett, Chin Ho and Jenny said in unison. Dan's face was becoming even redder with the blush that now extended down his neck. As his four friends looked on, he started to squirm in his chair. "Well, are you going to open it and share it with us?" teased Jenny. He handed her the box, Dan told her to open it and share it with the others in the office After everyone had a piece of the chocolate candy, McGarrett brought the half-empty box back to his friend. He then told them to bring their reports into his office for their meeting. The meeting started as soon as everyone had taken a seat. They had just wrapped up a case of a missing woman. What they found was she wasn't missing but just had forgotten to inform anyone she had left for an extended vacation. Five-0 notified her family that she was safe, the only task now was the pile of paperwork the case had left. McGarrett had started to fill them in on a new case when Jenny knocked on the door. She stepped into McGarrett 's office Jenny apologized for the interruption. "Sorry to interrupt your meeting boss but there's been another special delivery package just delivered for Danny. It has the same return address on it." Dan went over to her and took the package. This package was smaller then the first one. It had more weight to it also. He looked at the others as he carefully opened the package. Inside was a book of poetry and a note. 'Thank you for being there for me when I needed a friend. You showed me that you can find a friend to help you when you're really down on life. Please share the poems in this book with someone special to you on Valentine's Day.' The card was signed, 'A Grateful Person'. Dan handed the card to his boss. After he read the note he said, "Very cute Danno. Any idea who it might be, this 'Grateful Person' friend you helped?" McGarrett watched as Dan started to blush even more. "I have no idea Steve, really, no idea." Now he really started to wonder who this mystery person could be. He tried to think of who it could possibly be. "I guess we could have Che check it out for finger prints if you want. It must be from a woman who you helped out some time back. Can you think of anyone like that lately? Have you been helping damsels in distress again lately Danno?" McGarrett teased the young detective. McGarrett was barely able to contain himself as the reddish hue was intensified once again and now appeared again on Dan's neck area. Chin Ho held his hand over his mouth as if to stop the laughter. Kono had to excuse himself. He wasn't being as successful as the others in stopping his feelings. "Danny, you've help several people out just since Thanksgiving. I can think of at least nine young teenage girls you've helped rejoin with their families after they ran away from home. I can also think of five mothers who you helped whose sons had gotten themselves into trouble. And there was that woman you helped who took the drug over dose just last week, remember," Jenny reminded him as she looked through the poetry book. She then handed the book to Kono. "Yeah, and he helped out with the Christmas party for the kids at Children's Hospital," Kono reminded everyone as he also looked at the poetry. When he handed the book to Chin Ho, he stepped over to take another piece of the excellent chocolate candy. "And those are just a few things he's done in the last few months to help people out. How many other women has he helped out in the last six months or so? It could be anyone of them," Chin Ho told them now as he took his turn to look at the book. "Looks like you got yourself a real mystery here Danno," McGarrett said as he looked once again through the poetry book. He then read one of the passages in the book to them. 'A misty morning shinning is the start of a sunny day, when I see my love walking my way.' "How cute Danno. I can just imagine you taking a girl out the beach and reading her poetry from it," teased McGarrett. Kono had taken the book from his boss and was looking over the poetry. "Hey, brudda, can I borrow this book from you if you don't want to read it to Amy? I've got just the chick I'd like to read some of this to." Everyone laughed. "OK, everyone, let's get back to work." McGarrett reminded them The next day was Valentine's Day when McGarrett presented Jenny with a pink lei for the day. Jenny handed him his mail as he went through to his office. He was looking through his mail when Dan came into the office. "Got another one Steve," Dan told him as he handed him the letter. It had the same return address as the other three items received yesterday. McGarrett took the opened letter from him and looked at the card. It was just a 'Thank You' note once again saying thank you to him for helping her out and hoped he enjoyed the book. "Only the Post Office Box number is shown as the return address?" McGarrett asked him. He was really starting to wonder who this appreciative woman was and just what did Dan do for her that warranted this appreciation. "Yeah, this time though I called the Post Office where this box is and asked them what the name of the renter was. They only said, the person had put Jane Doe as the name on the application." "Jane Doe?" That was the name they used for people who were dead and had no form of identification. McGarrett now wondered if this woman could have come that close to losing her life when Dan helped her out. "Yeah, Jane Doe. How many women have we helped have a name like that?" Still not remembering any one particular woman he must have helped, this mystery person was starting to get to him. "They did say that there was a request from the renter, that when I asked them who had rented the box that they give me another envelope. I was just getting ready to go get it," Dan said. "You want me to go along with you?" McGarrett asked him. "I don't think this requires the two of us Steve. I'll go and get it and bring it back here. Who knows, maybe our mystery person will reveal herself to us now," Dan said with a smile as he left for the Post Office. The Postmaster handed him a large envelope. It looked like a normal envelope to him. Dan opened it. Inside was a picture of a young woman with long hair. It wasn't a very good picture and she was at a distance in the picture. It had the word "Me!" circled and had an arrow pointed toward the woman in the picture. Dan asked the Postmaster if this was the person who left the envelope. The Postmaster said it was not. He told him the person who had left the envelope had been an older woman then the one in the picture. Going back to the office Dan handed the photo to McGarrett. McGarrett couldn't recall ever meeting the girl either. Everyone in the office had the same problem. The face was familiar but they just couldn't think of who this person was. It was when Jenny was looking at it that she turned the picture over. There was a note written on the back. 'You saved my life on Valentine's Day those many years' back. The memory of the kindness you showed me then has helped me once again. You will always have a special place in my heart on this special day for me. Happy Valentine's Day.' The card was signed once again, 'A Grateful Friend'. Everyone saw a smile appear on Dan face. He now knew who it was, thinking back to that Valentine's Day so many years ago. He had responded to a call about a young girl who had been beaten up by her boyfriend several days before. On Valentine's Day she had been so down emotionally she talked of taking her own life. At the scene Dan had got her to change her mind. He told her then if she ever needed someone to talk to she could to give him a call. In the course of several weeks they had talked several times. Apparently, these talks had helped her. He also remembered the promise he had made to her of never telling anyone who she was. And he still wasn't going to break that promise he had made to her those many years back. Yes, she was a special and grateful friend indeed.Pau
