The Cure

By Rebecca Garth

written on 7-29-01

Ben Kokua was standing at the window in his office in the Hawaii Five-0 office. He was fiddling with the blinds when he heard something. As he turned around he saw his friend Danny Williams standing at his desk. Danny and Ben had just finished an important case for the Five-0 office. "Oh hi Danny. I didn't hear you come in."

"Ben, I've been talking to you for the last 5 minutes. Have you not heard anything I said."

"Huh! What? Oh, I am sorry. I just oh…uh…what did you say?"

"I was just telling you that I think I can finish up the report in the morning and we wont have to spend the night here."

"Oh sure, thanks bruddah. I am sorry."

"Ben, we have been friends a long time. Come on. You know you can tell me anything."

Ben knew what his partner was saying was the truth. He had told Danny many secrets over the last 7 years since he had gone to work for the team of Steve McGarrett, Danny Williams and Chin Ho Kelly. From problems with his family including his mom and dad and brother and his brother's wife and their son to girls he was dating, Danny was the first one to know. The fact that he had fallen in love with Danny's friend, Janie.

Danny had raised Janie since she was in High School and loved Danny as a brother and the love was returned. When Janie returned to the Islands after her husband had died of a heart attack she and Ben became close friends.

Then, suddenly one day Ben and Janie both discovered that they were in love with each other. They were married in what was supposed to be quiet ceremony. But of course, the popular detective and the successful lawyer couldn't decide whom not to invite so the wedding turned out to be very special but also very large with most of the dignitary of Hawaii in attendance.

Ben had written and sang a love song just to Janie. It told about being friends and falling in love with your best friend and pledging to always put God first in their lives. Janie had always had a strong faith in her religion. Ben had been raised a Baptist but he didn't always followed the Bible as he knew he should. In fact when they met, he had not been to church in years except for the occasional times that he went with his parents.

Janie had been in shock when Ben asked if she and Danny would come to church one Sunday to witness him being baptized. He told her that because of the strength she had shown in her Lord he knew he had wandered far away and he was coming home as the old Baptist song went. Janie wept she watched Ben going under the water, as she knew how far he had been away and how far he had come. When Ben finished singing, there wasn't a dry eye in the audience.

But because Ben was a detective, their marriage had been anything but average. Not six months after they were back from their honeymoon Ben had been shot in the arm. Not really a serious injury but he required blood and a overnight stay in the hospital. It had made Janie re evaluate her life. She had lost one husband to a heart attack and she didn't want to lose another. She wanted to make every moment special so she quit her job working for John Manicote as an assistant District Attorney and continued her studies as a grief counselor. This way she was able to adjust her hours to Ben's and when he had a day off after working weeks on a case, she too could take the day off and they could continue their pursuit of building the perfect sandcastle.

When they had been married two years, Ben had been ambushed by someone that had called and said, "He needed to talk to a 5-0 detective." Since Ben was in the neighbor he said he would take the call, thinking it might be the information he needed to close a case he was working on. But as Ben stepped out of the car, a man shot him in the chest and he barely got to the microphone to call for help.

When he arrived at the hospital, Steve McGarrett and Janie were there to meet him but they were both told that the chances of him living were next to nothing. When Danny and Chin arrived, Janie was in the chapel crying. Danny put his arms around her and she said, "I can't pray. All I can do is cry and ask God to take my tears as prayers to Him."

But the doctors were wrong and slowly Ben got better and was finally able to return home and then back to the Five 0 offices.

Then the ultimate surprise of all happened, a few months ago Janie and Ben were to have a baby, not just one but two. The doctor said he thought they would be boys, so Janie and Ben were overjoyed.

Together they prepared a nursery and bought matching furniture. But in a few months, something went wrong. Janie woke Ben up in the middle of the night screaming. "Ben something is wrong. I…I…I don't know what it is. I have never been in so much pain."

"What could be wrong?" Ben said as he was getting dressed. "Did you do anything different today, like paint part of the babies room or something where you might have pulled a muscle?"

"NOOOOOO! Ben just get me to the hospital. This isn't a pulled muscle." She gripped Ben around the neck and he carried her to the car. When they were inside the car, she passed out and he drove as fast as he ever did when in pursuit to get her to the hospital.

They immediately took her to surgery. Danny, Steve and Ben's brother, Roy, were with him in the waiting room. He had barely gotten the words out of his mouth when he called Danny.

Danny had stopped him in mid sentence and said. "I will call Steve. You call your family and we will be there as soon as possible."

Ben was trying not to cry when the doctor came in the first time and said. "I am sorry Ben. We did what we could, but nothing could save the baby boys. Even if you had been in the hospital when the pains started, we still couldn't have saved them. I am sorry. I don't have the right words. I only know that these things happen and we don't know why. But now we have a more serious problem. Janie is in need of emergency hysterectomy to save her life. I need for you to sign these releases."

Ben's hand was trembling so he could hardly hold a pen but somehow he managed to sign his name before he collapsed in Danny's arms. Both men cried in unembarrassed grief. For not only had they lost the babies, but also that they might lose their precious Janie. Steve told them to stay off work for as long as they needed.

The next few hours were touch and go for Janie but she pulled thought. Ben told her about the boys and both hugged each other and cried as if they would never stop crying. The funeral was attended by the Five-0 team, the DA's office and Ben's family. Janie and Ben had markers put up with the words "Benjamin William Kokua and Steven Alexander Kokua never to be held in our arms but forever in our hearts. We will hold you in heaven." They had chosen these names when they had first heard they would be boys. William was for Danny and Steven for Steve McGarrett. Ben's name was Benjamin Alexander.

But now it was months since the deaths and Ben had been busy on cases as before. Janie had not returned to grief counseling but always told Ben she would when she felt stronger.

"I…I…I don't know Danny how to explain what is bothering me. It is Janie but I can't put my finger on the exact problem. We do the things we did before but the zest and zip aren't there. She laughs and acts happy but things just aren't the same. You know what I am trying to say. The zaniest is gone. I…I…I can't explain it. This weekend, since it was Father's Day, we went to my folks. Janie played with my nephew and we all played volleyball for a while. But I could tell it just wasn't the same. She didn't tease when someone missed a serve or any of the fun things she always said before."

Danny's eyes filled with tears, as he knew exactly what Ben was saying. He too had noticed that Janie didn't have the mischievous look in her eyes and when she looked at Ben. It was more of deep sadness then the playfulness she had had before. The deep undying love was there but the fun wasn't. "I wish I knew what to say Ben but I don't know. Hey! Wait! Aren't you going on vacation a 3 days? Maybe the rest away from here will help. Aren't you two going to Showlow, Arizona, where you spent your Honeymoon? Maybe that will be the cure she needs."

"Yes! Maybe you are right Danny. Maybe that will be the cure. Thanks old friend. "

But that night Ben awoke and turned to hug Janie, he discovered she wasn't in bed. He got up and looked everywhere for her. He had found her before in the nursery, crying even though they had turned it back to a guestroom. They had given everything to his cousin, who was expecting twins. Also, he knew she came in there to read her Bible and grieve when she couldn't sleep. But she wasn't here.

He looked in the garage and the red convertible she drove was missing. He became frantic now and hurriedly put some clothes on and went to Danny's.

When Danny answered his door, he could hardly open his eyes. "What is it Ben?"

Ben didn't let him finish. "Hurry and get dressed I can't find Janie and I don't have a clue where to look."

Danny got dressed and tried to calm Ben down. When they were in Danny's car he said, "Listen Ben. I think I know where she is. Let's go there first."

Danny drove straight to the cemetery where the twins were buried. There by the small tombstones was a sobbing body, which could be seen by the moonlight.

Danny said, "I will go home and let you two be alone."

"Danny, I can't thank...."

"Don't say anything else just go."

As Ben sat beside her and put his arm around her, she screamed a blood-curdling scream. When he got her calmed down, she said, "I…I you scared me. I am so…so…so sorry."

Ben said in his quite calming voice, "You didn't hurt me any. I am ok."

"No, that is not what I am saying," she said in between sobs. "I am sorry about the babies. I promise Ben, I have been over everything I did that day and I didn't do anything to cause their deaths. I am so sorry. Now you will never be a Daddy. I am so…sooooo sorry. When we were with your family on Father's Day, it hit me that you will never be a Daddy."

"What are you saying?" Ben said as he stroked her short hair. "The Doctor told us that day that even if we had been sitting in his office, the same thing would have happened. He told us that nothing you did caused this. It is just something that happens sometimes."

"I know he told us that but when the pains started you ask what I had done that day. And I know in your heart, that you think that maybe I did something and I've tried to remember what I did. Now you will never be a Daddy and it is all my fault."

"Janie! No! Please, I didn't mean, well I mean I was only trying to calm you down and make you think that maybe it was pulled muscle. I have never thought you did anything. Oh Baby, why hadn't you told me this before."

"I was too ashamed to admit to you. I can't remember the day, only that I read a book and watched some television."

"Janie, lover, it doesn't matter. Please! Please try to stop and understand that I don't blame you. I've thought a lot about the fact that we can't have children and to tell the truth, in my line of work I am better not being a daddy. You know how much we both enjoy my nephew, so I think that can be our family."

"Ben I love you so much. I cant express how much I am so thankful for you."

"Janie, you know I love you just as much. Everyday, in my first prayer of the day, I thank the Lord for you." By this time, Janie's crying had stopped and a few hours later they got in the car and went home.

The next morning Ben got dressed and went to the Five-0 office. He had a request in his hand that he was going to present to Steve, a request that his vacation begin immediately instead of two days from then. When he went into Steve's, office he could see that Danny was there and had probably filled the boss in on the happenings of the night.

"Steve, I would like to begin my vacation now." He knew he had the days coming and he knew that if he stayed, he would be doing busy work since he had finished the report on the last case that he had finished. He knew his request would be OK'd he turned to leave.

"Wait! I haven't said yes yet."

Ben turned to see a very white faced McGarrett looking at him 'Oh no!" he thought. 'Now I have done it.'

Steve carefully chose his words as he said, "I will do anything, do you understand Ben? ANYTHING to make Janie OK again. She is like a little sister to me. If you need more time, if she needs to go to a psychiatric hospital on the mainland, anything you can think of that I can do let me know. I want her to be the old Janie she was before."

Ben held out his hand and said, "Thank you Steve."

Steve shook his hand in a way that Ben had never felt before. He really thought Steve needed a hug but he didn't know how to say it so Ben only said, "Janie knows how much you love her and we both appreciate this offer. I will talk to her after this vacation."

When he got home, Janie had left a note for him. "I think I am almost through packing for the vacation. Mama Rey called and said you had asked her to come up with a cure for my illness. I have gone to her house and will be back soon. Love Janie."

'Oh NOOOO!' thought Ben. 'I did call Mama Rey. She always has some kind of herbal tea that can cure anything. But I didn't mean for her to talk to Janie. I was going to get the crushed up herbs and put some in Janie's tea so she wouldn't think I thought she was going crazy. Oh my, what am I going to tell her when she gets home?"

Just then, he heard a sound behind him. Janie was coming out of the closet wearing the sexiest bra and garter belt he had ever seen. She slowly went over to him and put her hand under his mouth to close it. "What's wrong Detective? I've worn this before. Have you forgotten?" she said in the Texas southern drawl that she saved for times like this.

"Uh…uh…uh! No! I just…"But before he could explain they were in each others arms and catching up on the time they had lost in the previous months.

"Ben" she said after they had finished and he was through taking a shower, "The cure Mama Rey…"

"Oh Janie!" Ben interrupted "I just thought maybe some herbs would help both of us."

"Oh! BOTH of us?" Janie said with a twinkle in her eyes. "Well Mama didn't mention that. But I know after we cried and talked last night that that was the real cure I had been searching for but not knowing what I was searching for"

By this time she was at Ben's side as he looked at the small bottle of crushed herbs on the dresser. "Oh, is this the cure Mama Rey thought would help? These are certainly crushed extremely small. How much do you put in a cup of tea?"

"Oh, that is the secret to the cure my friend. You put 1 teaspoon in 2 quarts of water."

"Oh! That is a lot of tea to drink."

"Oh, but my love, it isn't put into a tea it is a herbal enema."

"WHAT?" Ben said as he put the bottle back on the dresser and in doing so, he knocked their wedding picture off the shelf it was setting on.

"OH yes. That is the secret to the cure and only for you, Detective Benjamin Alexander Kokua, would I go through such a cure." As she said each word, she kissed him so that he knew what she was saying was truly true. And as she finished her sentence, he gently picked her up and gently laid her on the bed and both of them knew that the packing would have to wait for a while longer.
