Author's note: I just wrote this as a spur of the moment kind of thing. It is about Jack writing to young fan on being a good celebrity. Good Fans and Bad Fans By Isabeau Saberhagen © 8-28-07 I'm not entirely sure why I'm writing this; or if anyone else will ever see it. I suppose eventually Marie will find it and considering it's contents publish it. Maybe I just had a creative itch. What this is…is some friendly advice for all the young celebrities of the world. I know all you young people of fame and fortune don't like to be told what to do; but please take it from someone who knows; someone who played this game maybe a little too long. For the last ten years I was the star of the most popular crime drama in TV history. I'm not boasting. It brought me several experiences I wouldn't trade for the world and I've never viewed it as a bad decision. It also brought some wisdom; some tips for living in the spotlight. First: Like the camera; don't love it. Oblige the media; but make sure they respect your privacy. Don't give huge televised tours of your home. There's no reason to make every detail of you public. Second: Being rich and famous does not provide you with and excuse to take your work lightly. If your performance slacks you're out of a job and pretty soon you'll find yourself being pushed to the side. So please, practice everyday and take a little pride in your line of work. Third: Spending money like its going out of style is never in style. Why do you think other cultures think of us as being excessive and selfish? That 2000 dollar purse or that 5000 dollar suit may not be worth it later, and will most likely end up in the back of your closet. The money is better in a savings account rather than a salesman's pay check. And, one more thing I'd like to talk about is fans. Fans can help or hurt you; and they normally do both. There is such a thing as a good fan and a bad one. The person that politely comes up to you; says they know who you are and would just like to shake your hand is a good fan. I've really come to appreciate them; whenever I meet one I smile and shake; even make a little chit chat. You'll find that as you’re out and about on a normal day the fans you run into are these quiet and polite ones. There are of course; bad fans. The screaming people waving cardboard signs who'll fight over the slightest thing you touch. These are the people you hear about breaking into celebrities homes, stalking them or taking candid pictures. Like the media, be very careful about how you treat these fans. Indulge just a bit to keep them happy; but to much and you might instill them with a false sense of intimacy. I met a girl in Los Angles; she wasn't a fan of mine and I won't say whose she was; but she was convinced that she had a deep spiritual connection with me. She had never met me; but she knew far more about me than any complete stranger could. Basically, moderation is the key to this thing called fame. Ignore me if you want; what works for me may not necessarily work for you; but I think even if you never take this to heart or even insult me for writing this and wasting your precious time you'll learn at least a few of these things on your own. Like there are good fans and bad fans; I suppose there will be those of you that will give celebrity a good name and a bad name. Back to Isabeau Saberhagen's Page Go to Fan Fiction Page
