"Hawaii Five-0" and exciting new hour-long action adventure series starring Jack Lords debuts on WCCO-4, Thursday at 7:00. The series is photographed in color entirely on location. Leonard Freeman, executive producer of "Hawaii Five-0" describe his new series as "…a hard-hitting police show with stories indigenous to the state of Hawaii as "Naked City" was to New York. We’re not just going to do good cop stories that could only happen in Hawaii. There are many triggers unique to Hawaii that we can use. The geography is inherently unique, the tourist trade presents unique police problems. Hawaii is a military bastion-when you are there you know there’s a war on. And we will deal with it as a military bastion." Like all state police units, Hawaii Five-0 functions state wide. But unlike any other state in the world, the Five-0 state is made up seven islands, each with its own police chief and autonomous police force. Using boat, chartered airlines or helicopter, Five-0 covers all seven islands and works in cooperation with all police units.
Steve McGarrett, head of Hawaii Five-0 state police unit, is a man on the move - a man whose instincts are not to climb a wall, but to charge through it. He thinks and acts in the same instant. He is also a compassionate, well-educated, and dedicated head of the state investigation unit. Others comprising the McGarrett team are: Danny Williams, born in Hawaii, educated at the Police Academy in Berkley, California where he graduated top of his class - detail man of Five-0: Kono, two hundred sixty-five pounds of muscle in the shape of a walking telephone booth - tough, quick and capable; and Chin Ho Kelly, a burly, powerful, multi-lingual Chinese, as wise as an Oriental proverb - a work horse. Jack Lord, who stars as Steve McGarrett, has appeared in such movies as "Man Of The West" and "The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell," both starring the late Gary Cooper; on Broadway with Kim Stanley in "Traveling Lady" and opposite Barbara Bel Geddes in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and on television as star of the popular series, "Stony Burke." Young motion picture favorite James MacArthur makes his series television debut in "Hawaii Five-0" in the role of Danny Williams. MacArthur, son of Helen Hayes and the late playwriter Charles MacArthur, had his first acting experience in summer stock as a teenager. His first television role was on the CBS Television Network’s "Climax!" series. His latest movies are "The Love-In" and "The Angry Breed." Kam Fong is featured as Chin Ho Kelly; Zulu as Kono; Maggi Parker as McGarrett’s Secretary, May; Morgan White as the Attorney General and Richard Denning in the recurring role as the Governor of Hawaii. Ricardo Montalban, Sal Mineo and Hawaiian night club favorite Hilo Hattie - in her television dramatic debut – are a few of the guest stars scheduled for early appearances on "Hawaii Five-0." As a unique premiere showcase for the series, a special feature-length presentation of "Hawaii Five-0" - with guest stars Nancy Kwan, Leslie Nielsen, Andrew Duggan and James Gregory - was presented on "The CBS Friday Night Movies," September 20th. Leonard Freeman, executive producer of "Hawaii Five-0" has produced such other outstanding television series as "Route 66," "The Untouchables" and "Mr. Novak."
